The most recent level-5 stream have confirmed the next entries of the Fantasy Life and Professor Layton series to be for smartphones rather than 3DS. The stream hasn't finished yet so you can't rewatch.

I thought the next Layton was confirmed as a mobile game a long time ago now. And this is going to keep happening. It's why some of us are interested in sales figures, not because we prefer to talk sales than play games, but because they matter. Mobile is obliterating handheld gaming and this is the result.

Layton 7 looked like a mess so I'm not fussed about that but FL2 is a shame.

I'm kind of glad to see FL2 not on 3DS. When the vast majority of games on the system are entries in one series or another, it's nice to have this standalone title. As for Layton 7, Azran Legacies was the last game with the Professor as the hero, so I don't really care anymorre

It also says 3DS on the website.

No it doesn't. I've looked high and low and saw no mention of 3DS anywhere. In fact, the bottom of the page specifies that the game is being released for iOS and Android (in English), and the products page also lists Layton 7 as an iOS/Android release.

It's disappointing, to say the least. I wouldn't mind if they made both mobile and handheld iterations so everyone can enjoy. But I just don't like to play games on my phone, doesn't quite work as well, drains battery etc. and besides, that's what my 3DS is for, otherwise I wouldn't have got a handheld in the first place.

This practise, though, together with F2P/microtransaction games popping up everywhere is going to continue, if we like it or not. I just wish it wouldn't affect so many of my favourite franchises...

I'm open to mobile gaming of all sorts, I just don't do it. With the 3DS eShop & games selection moving closer and closer to becoming another Google Play Store, it really doesn't matter where I play it by this point, as long as its good & with Level 5's track record, it seems likely.

They updated the page. It did say so this morning. I guess they only recently decided not to develop a 3DS version after all.

I can't help but think the Nintendo/DeNA announcement was the cause of this. Sure it made the investors happy but it seems to have caused huge problems with everyone else.

I doubt it, both games would have been in development long before the Dena announcement.

I thought Fantasy Life was partly owned by Nintendo.

We'll probably be seeing a lot more of this from other studios.Everybody has a cellphone or tablet now. The market is insanely larger than dedicated handheld systems.

It's ok to make games for phones, but why bother making them numbered sequels if it's pretty clear they're spinoffs at best.

It makes people think they might be better ?

If it has an option to just pay for the whole thing and supports physical controls on one of iOS or Android I will give Fantasy Life 2 a shot.

There is 2 scenarios to this,

1. They charge 40 bucks for the game and it fails miserably. Lets face it, no one will pay more than 1.99 for a mobile game.

2. It's free to download and full of micro-transactions. This scenario is the most likely imo.

Come on level-5....For real man?

I'm calling this now, they flunk and will port it over to vita or 3ds.

After waiting 2 years for Fantasy life and actually getting to play it, I was really dissatisfied. Each life was interesting but lacked full use and had sooo much potential. From the gameplay alone I can assume the sales weren't so hot. From the screens I'm seeing it doesn't appear to even be the same game so I'm not all that upset right now still rather sad.

Lifes like a game there are those who are good at it and those who need some practice.
