I just thought this was an interesting teaser of what the 3DS has to offer. Famitsu (a long running Japanese video game magazine) has published its first 3DS reviews. Included are:

  • Winning Eleven 3D Soccer: 8/8/8/8, 32 points
  • Dynasty Warriors Chronicle: 9/9/8/8, 34 points
  • Shanghai 3D Cube: 7/7/7/5, 26 points
  • Super Street Fighter IV 3D Edition: 9/8/8/9, 34 points
  • Super Monkey Ball 3D: 9/8/8/7, 32 points
  • Puzzle Bobble 3D: 6/6/6/6, 24 points
  • Ridge Racer 3D: 8/8/7/9, 32 points
  • Professor Layton and the Mask of Miracles: 8/8/8/8, 32 points
  • Combat of Giants: Dinosaurs: 6/6/6/6, 24 points
  • Nintendogs + Cats: 10/9/9/10, 38 points

Very pleased with their score for Super Monkey Ball 3D - I thoroughly enjoyed playing it when I got the chance and I can't wait for it to arrive in the post on launch day. I'm not a big fan of one reviewer's opinion that using the gyroscope causes problems with the 3D, though - the Circle Pad is just as comfortable to use, so if you're that bothered about seeing the game in 3D, use that instead. (That's just my opinion on their review, though, I don't fancy starting a whole SMB discussion in an inappropriate thread.)

Very much looking forward to getting nintendogs + cats, too, and Professor Layton when it eventually launches over here.

Famitsu reviews really have no credibility, I'd much rather just here some feedback from people who've played the games.

Too bad I can't read the reviews in question. That would be a lot more helpful than a buncha numbers.

Good point, and luckily they added summaries of the reviews:

  • Super Street Fighter IV : "The way you can use the touch screen to launch even charge moves in an instant is actually kind of revolutionary for the series, a change that I think could lead to some neat new tactics. Despite that, the controls can still be very difficult at times, even with the ability to redefine buttons. Whether you're able to overlook that will define your overall the opinion of the game."
  • Dynasty Warriors 3DS : "Nothing has changed much in the DW formula, but switching between characters while shouting out orders to your side gives this game a new sort of real-time strategy feel. Going 3D makes it easier to gauge positioning between yourself and enemies, which makes the game easier overall."
  • Nintendogs + Cats : "The sheer fuzziness factor on all the pets is too cute. Watching them totter around in 3D is so calming, and the act of petting them has much more of a you-are-there feel to it. Keeping a dog and cat together gives you a huge number of must-see moments, and the ability to interact quickly and easily with other pet owners is great."
  • Professor Layton and the Mask of Miracle : "The simple interface and screen setup is similar to the rest of the series and put together very well. The animated parts are in 3D and there are a variety of new features and game gimmicks, but the play style hasn't changed much. It's a natural progression for the series, 3D support included."
  • Super Monkey Ball 3DS : "Having three different games to enjoy is great, although the Monkey Fight and Race bits are rehashes of other titles and not all that exciting. The core Monkey Ball game, though, uses 3D in a variety of gimmicks and traps to make the whole experience a lot more impactful and exciting. It's simple to learn and highly addictive."
  • Ridge Racer 3D : "The courses are full of floaty jumps and other gimmicks to get you inside the game more. Racing across them is pretty fun, and the drifting (which tends to throw off beginners in other games) is simple to pull off. The rival cars you race in Grand Prix mode and so on are pretty tough, though, and I wonder if the game's still too hard overall. A difficulty selection would have been nice."

Andriasang.com also featured some quotes from the reviews this morning.

Unfortunately, the two I'm most curious about -- Pilotwings and Steel Diver -- are not amongst the reviewed batch.

Yeah would have liked to see a pilotwings review but I can wait. And Ridge Racer sounds better than I thought which I'm pleased about. I'm sure my daughter will like "The sheer fuzziness factor on all the pets" (and the missus probably! ). I'll have to try Street Fighter for myself before a purchase though, I'm bad enough at the game as it is,without control issues!
Thanks @Foxy

What's this bit for again?

Actually, it does. Famitsu is a better quality magazine than anything I've read in English.

Also, it's Samurai Warriors, not Dynasty Warriors. Glad to see it got 32. Of course, because Western press doesn't actually understand the Warriors games, over here it'll get scores like 3/10, 4/10, with equally moronic "reviews" to back that up.

1UP needs to hire better translators.

Dude, you can't even read Famitsu.

My opinion of the magazine is coloured by the fact I subscribe to it and can read it. Your opinion of the magazine is coloured by your frightening and irrational obsession with Japan. I don't agree with you in the slightest.

No I mean I agree with the scores they give almost all the games ive played are spot on. I never read why. not even in english magazines anymore, because I hate how a game can get a low score for graphics

If you judge the quality of a magazine based entirely on its scores than...

Actually, no. Not going to argue this. Will say this: scores are such a tiny part of Famitsu. In 120 odd pages each issue, 2 pages are dedicated to scores. And English, Japanese, Arabic or German, no good magazine bases scores on graphics. There are heaps of good magazines out there :-/

...how could they possibly publish reviews if they hadn't played the games???

Didn't they give Smash Bros. Brawl solid 10s? Even the best magazines get it wrong sometimes...

ANYWAYS I like Famitsu and agree on a lot of the scores they give

And reviewers are usually more well spoken about it. I still trust people I know more because I know their tastes, however.

Are you even sure you know what the numbers mean? I'm pretty sure with Famitsu they give you a solid breakdown of everything about the game, not that it ever gets echoed in these articles.

Ignore him, then, please. This type of response (whether accurate or not) is not warranted and not welcome here.

Thank you.
