Yeah I kinda wanted to this one physical to play it on either system. But since it's cheap on the eShop I could just buy it twice and still save money
Not that I'd do that. But then I'll have to choose where to play this.
Hm. Well I only have one etrian odyssey on the regular 2DS. I could balance things off by downloading it there.
For reference, EOV is currently about 10 dollars more expensive right now on the Mexican eShop, and I'm pretty sure that one had a price cut at some point.
Only time I've not supported Atlus' 3DS releases at launch (besides the one or two games they've published which I don't like) is when they decided to pull pricing shenanigans on their bigger series. The only game I was willing to pay the Atlus tax on was SMT IV, which came with that lavish guidebook.
I've gone back to regularly buying their games now that the pricing isn't arranged to exploit the enthusiasm of their biggest fans.
Whether I'll actually play it at launch is another matter entirely, though. To be honest, I could see myself waiting a few months before getting into it.
BTW, can I just say that the 3DS is a beast? I'm just finishing up the last Ace Attorney game. Etrian Nexus is coming next month. And I fully expect Persona Q2 to launch before the end of the year. I never expected that system to continue playing such a huge role in my gaming life going into 2019.
@Quarth While I can't say for 100% sure you should be fine starting here. None of the stories connect to the previous games and the characters are basically all blank slates. You might as well start here with the latest game anyways as it will have more quality of life upgrades over the other games.

If I was only ever able to have Monster Hunter and EO games in the future, I would be a happy man.
@Quarth I'll go ahead and recommend Etrian Odyssey IV. It frequently goes cheap in sales, is designed to be accessible to new players, and is one of the funnest games in the series.
You can start anywhere, though. They're all good games, and they're not really connected to one-another.
I guess this would be a good one to play if you only want to play one game in the series, as it takes classes and dungeons from every other game in the series.
