That's the point, that they aren't old. The story is that Mizrabel (or however it's properly spelled) has been cast into Wasteland, but has kidnapped popular characters whom have hearts in order to collect their "heart power" and return her and her castle to the normal Cartoon World.

Isn't Mizrabel in Sleeping Beauty?I thought kids still remembered that movie. Not to mention people who are older.

That's Maleficent, and no, she's not a forgotten character. Mizrabel seems to be a shapeshifter.
You can clearly see Mizrabel changing shapes several times when you meet her before deciding to use Maleficent as her avatar.

It is also stated in the demo that she kidnapped famous characters to steal their life force and become stronger herself. (and that all other villains are actually illusions made by her to hurt you).

But does anyone really remember her name?

Didn't like the demo.Here's why I didn't like it:
1.)Using paint and thinner isn't as good as it was in the original. You could make enemies die or make them join you. That gave you a bit more options.
2.)It was inaccurate. Most little girls probably don't forget Tangled or Beauty in the Beast,so why would the Beast(IDK his real name) and Rapunzel be in Wasteland?
3.)Mickey was a bit too slow for me.
4.)Disney!If Netfilx can put movies and TV shows on the 3DS,then you can put REAL cutscenes in the game.
5.)I didn't see that many OLD characters.6 year olds aren't the only people who like Epic Mickey, guys.

1) Agree with that and the fact that I kept running out of thinner.
2) The reason they were in Wasteland is because that villian captured them and took them there. (you must have missed that part of the story)
3) Didnt really notice that
4) I think they were trying to go for that nostalgia 16 bit era feeling and if they added full animated cutscenes it would have ruin that feeling.
5) I saw Peter Pan, Wendy, Beast, Scar, the Evil Queens from Snow White and Sleeping Beauty, Scrooge Mc Duck, Captain Hook Goofy and Jiminy Cricket. Compare that too Rapunzel who is a somewhat new character there were a ton of older Disney Characters.

Are you sure you were playing the Epic Mickey demo?? :P

This was one of the best demos I've ever played for 3ds in a long while. Really thought the demo was well done, it's certainly a unique platformer just like the original but in 2D form.

I played the demo. It was pretty fun, although I'm not a fan of the "buttons + force you to take out the stylus every few seconds" control scheme. Of course, maybe that's just with my current "non-XL" 3DS where the stylus is placed in the most inconvenient spot possible. :p

Overall it seemed like a good game.

So, now that the demo is out in NA, here's my Quickie Review (Trademark of Philip DeFranco):

  • Although a little slow, Mickey controls well
  • No "real" cutscenes, but that didn't seem to bothersome to me
(I've only been recently introduced to what is referred to as "Next-gen," meaning that before two or three years ago, I hadn't experienced such a wide variety of games, and was mostly limited to Nintendo's popular franchises, like Mario, Zelda, and Pokemon. The reason for this is because we had localization issues where I used to live. Plus, there's this BS law called 101, which states that everything MUST be translated to French before being sold of the "local" market. So yeah, that severely crippled the gaming industry where I used to live.)
  • I wish A was jump, and B was attack. My childhood programmed those settings by default in my brain. Not saying the controls are bad, but it took me a second or two to get used to.
  • The "stylus fetching" could potentially get a little awkward, but not too big of an inconvenience
  • The 3D effects are a little lazy (On the same level as NSMB 2 on 3DS, whre the background has depth. However, it seems there was more effort put into this than NSMB 2)
  • The gameplay was fluid, and suits players of all caliber. I'm only at the beginning right now, but I'm sure it gets progressively harder

Overall, I'd say a solid: 8/10

I'd recommend it if:

  • You're looking for an original, non-mario platformer
  • You like Disney characters for either the nostalgia factor or any other potential reason
  • You want a somewhat slower game, but nonetheless a great platformer
  • You're not looking for overly complicated gameplay (looking at you, TWEWY. You were fun, but so tiring on the hands...)

Yay or nay for me?

I say: yay!

First reviews are saying the game is not what was expected.

-Broken rhythm thanks to constant stylus painting/thinning

  • 8 to 10 hours but half of them of backtracking
  • Later levels full of cheap deaths and ridiculous difficulty.
  • Lame story

It seems like Dreamrift has repeated the same errors that made Monster Tale an average game and added some of Henry Hatswroth's to round things up.

Good job.

This game had the potential to be a 10 had they completely ditched the Flow breaking Stylus Painting/thinning and got rid of the bucket load of text, because other wise at least in terms of the actual platforming and graphical presentation, it feels like a fantastic follow up to Castle of Illusion...It's even better because of the power jump, StereoScopic 3D and of course better graphics. Too bad it's drenched in unnecassary stylusc ontrols and uninteresting chatter. :p

Also, Later levels full of cheap deaths and ridiculous difficulty? Now I'm even more interested.lol

I'm sorry to see not-so-positive reviews, but I'm not going to drop my pre-order at this point. The biggest reason why I wanted this game in the first place is because I am a Disney fan and this seems to be a faithful throwback to Disney video games of the past. It could be argued that Disney video games, while still good, are not of Mario-style quality, so I'm still looking forward to the game.

The only main problem with it is that it's too short.

Actually, that's Queen Grimhilde, but I guess after hiding under a boulder for decades, one would be forgotten. /rimshot

Bah, forget Power of Illusion I'm getting Adventure Time :p
Really though, the paint/thinning stylus mechanic only seems to work well or seems to be more convenient if you have a 3DS XL due to the none retractable stylus(which is akward pulling out of the original 3DS and having to extend it while the game is on) 'and' stylus placement.

Had this game ditched a lot of the dialogue, got rid of the Stylus painting, had more stages & bosses it would of probably been a winner.
Because as is, it looks beautiful, sounds fantastic, plays great and captures that whimsical charming & enchanting feel of the Disney.

Got this and Epic Mickey 2 yesterday, so far I'm enjoying the 3DS game more (got up to the second wing of the Castle).
I like that the original Megadrive sound effects remain, also that the first stage has the same tune as the first level of Castle of Illusion. I've so far not found the paint thinning thing to be annoying, I really like what I've played up to now.

It's really hard to see which age group they were aiming for. With all the heavy dialog it might not appeal to children as much. Older kids and adults might not mind that as much but the painting to quite a few seems really annoying. I for one don't mind it as much as was said above. Also I can't see how this even looks all that great on a 3ds. It rather tiny on my XL so can't imagine how much smaller it would look. Of course it will sell by the boatloads just from name alone but many might be a little disappointed come Christmas this year. I still want it well because I have XLs. :P. However ill wait for bargain bin prices.
