Wouldn't it be cool if youu could get ebooks on the 3ds. Ebooks are made for the 3ds as two screens one page for each screen. Hold the system sideways and use the touch screen to flick to the next page. That is would be so cool I hope nintendo do that. Don't you guys want it aswell

I know Mario personally as I caught him in a pokeball!

I don't think Nintendo would make that on the eShop, but maybe Kindle, Nook, or Kobo would.

Kindle, Nook and Kobo have better things to do than come up with apps for inferior reading experiences.

The 3DS screen resolution does not even come close to offering a good book reading experience. As a portable gaming device, having that kind of resolution was deemed unnecessary by Nintendo, and I agree with them in this instance. It would have unnecessarily bumped up the cost of the device.

If you want to read ebooks, you can get a Kindle for $100 these days. At a pinch, the iPad and iPhone do have screen resolutions high enough for comfortable book reading experiences.

If you're absolutely desperate, there's 100 Classics DS, which can be played on the 3DS. It's a terrible reading experience though, so consider yourself warned.

That's an excellent idea. The 3DS resolution, contrary to the DS, is great for reading. You can even do it in 3D. The different options with the dual screen is also exciting. Hopefully they do something like that. Kindle is not in color, I wouldn't say it's superior in any way. I like my Kindle, and I like the ink technology, but Amazon could do it very simply. Also the other formats.

You need colour for reading a book why? You need 3D for reading a book why? You're talking about gimmicks that, when it comes to a reading experience, are trashy and completely unnecessary.

The Kindle is about a million times better at being a reading device. Nintendo... Fans... Are always so quick to point out that the 3DS is a superior gaming system to, say, an iPhone because it's a dedicated gaming device. That works in other ways too. The Kindle is built for reading books. Books of black and white text, and a lot of it, which can become very painful if you try and do it on a video game console screen. I tried it with 100 Classic Books, and if you even try and compare the experience to the Kindle, you're not being rational.

To use a 3DS asan eReader, you would have to be really, really desperate.

Ever tried reading a Docter Suess book without color? Me neither, but I promise you it's not fun. And what is a "gimmick" really? Is it what skeptics call a technology before it catches on?

Lots of censorship here...

Trashy? What does that mean? Yes, I need color. First, the book cover for every book, and color for many other books. and 3D could be immersive and awesome in some aspects. Probably for the drawings. Read Alice in Wonderland sometime.

These are not gimmicks, which is another word that means nothing and thrown out sometimes. It's a gimmic like better graphics are gimmicks, or anything is a gimmick. I have a Kindle, I just said it... so your point is moot. Yes, it's a great device. But readings books on the 3DS will be great too. For one thing, the processing will be much better. Kindle is slow. And the ability to combine it with online dictionaries, with other 3DS features, with sharing, with playing a game and switching to a book , not to mention the stylus (kindle has no touch abilities in contrast to some other formats) - it is actually much superior. Also, 3DS is not a DS.

Ok fine. The 3DS can be the second best (after the iPad) device on the market for little children's books.

That still doesn't make it competitive with the Kindle for anything worth reading after you turn 10 years old, though.

Alice in Wonderland is an adults' book. And like explained, it will have many features not on the Kindle, which is a very poor device, except for the ink. And I like it as an inferior cheap device though.

No, sorry. The 3DS resolution is not good enough for books. The battery life is not good enough for books. The 3D effect would mean the book would have to be build from ground up to take advantage of the technology, which is so utterly pointless that no one is going to put in a real effort there.

You might get one or two half heated 3DSware attempts at it, but no. The 3DS is limited technology when it comes to being an eReader. And more importantly, no one is going to waste money developing for it when there are betteer options for the publishers out there

Who says it has to compete with Kindle? Does the 3DS compete with digital music players because it plays music?

It's one thing to say it won't happen than to say it won't be good. The 3DS is such a superior device, in every conceivable way (graphics, power, features) than an ebook reader that it could be fabulous if they wanted.

There's only one feature that counts when it comes to eReaders, and that's the quality of the display.

You don't understand the concept of specialised technology, do you? The eReaders are superior to the 3DS in the one and only area that counts for reading - the display of characters on the screen.

I find it especially amusing because, I bet elsewhere, you've defended the 3DS against the iPad, claiming that because it has buttons and is a specialized device for gaming, it's better at gaming than the iPad, even though, by your own reasoning here, the iPad is better, with better connectivity, better applications better screen, and so on and so forth.

An ipad and a 3DS are not comparable. One is a tablet computer, one is a handheld. An ebook reader and a 3DS are not comparable either. One is a cheap rudimentary device for reading books, an the other is a powerful handheld capable of handling very advanced graphics and features. The 3DS can display books in high resolution (800X240, not to mention textures and features that are not available on the ipod and iphone) that will look brilliant. And all the other important advantags (color, stylus) will be cool.

It's hilarious to see that you defend a specialized device after I read you bashing the 3DS because (wrongly) you thought it's not as a good as a portable device, and you think devices need to be integrated with phones. Lol.

I'm all for reading Dr. Suess books in '3D' on the 3DS....I want bursts of colors popping off the screen baby B-)
None of this boring and dull black & White rubbish. the 3D alone would give the art work depth and pop, and that's easily far more exciting and would make for one far more immersive visual experience.

Uh, I tried that 100 classic books thing on a ds lite and it was easy to read. And iphone 1-3 resolution is about the same of the 3ds.
EDIT: and since it wouldn't use 3D it'd be even higher.

Uh, okay if you can get 10 hours with ds games, you'd be able to get even more with books because there is no audio and it's just black words on a screen. Books also require little brightness. I don't see 10+ hours inadequate.

especially since Nook Color offers only less than 8 hours with wi-fi off.
