I think at this point it could still go either way. The 3DS needs to get a lot more good games, and unlike with the DS - I feel like that wont happen as much in the coming years. I hope I'm wrong though.
Honestly, unless a miracle happens, like Atlus and XSEED support the hell out of it, I don't think the 3DS will do as well as the DS.
If the sales figures in Japan are any indication, the 3DS looks like it's going to be the JRPG machine. Plus, with XSEED existing, we'll probably get lots of great stuff in the west, and considering how SMT 4 is a 3DS exclusive, it looks like Atlus will make many games for the device. So I'm not too worried for the future in that regard.

Based on what's likely going to be the first two years for the 3DS, I would definitely say I enjoy the titles I've experienced from the first two years of the DS much more. The 3DS had an excellent stride going at the end of 2011, but then disappointed me with Kid Icarus Uprising and Resident Evil Revelations. It also lacks a really good first person shooter, which the DS had well before its two year mark. Having said this, the 3DS is looking to be more competitive against the DS's legacy this year. I hope the titles hold up.
I'm not even going to compare the 3DS going into its third year to the DS's lifetime library, as that's DS all the way easily.
I liked the DS better. 3DS is tons better technically, but I was younger and DS seemed really cool when it came out. There was TONS of games that came out for it almost instantly 5 months after it was out.

Oh ya, not to mention no regular SD card support, 3D, spotpass, actually having games to play. I'll by PS Vita once it has 4G, SD card, 3D, spotpass, and actual stuff to play. My bet is that it will only do 4G as an improvement.

I mean publishing the niche games we don't usually get. That used to be Atlus' thing, but they almost entirely stopped with that these past few years, except for Code of Princess. And XSEED seems to support the Sony side more. They didn't release much on the DS(EDIT: Oh wait, they released 10 games on the DS. Huh. I don't remember any of them, except for RGC and Solatorobo), and while they have released two 3DS games, both of them were multiplatform for the PSP and Vita. Honestly, I'm still very worried.
It never got Smash Bros game, nor an original 3D Mario game.
In my book, that's 2 more points for DS, and 0 for the 3DS.
That's a BS reason. If you don't like a game, you don't have to buy it. It's existence shouldn't cause you to judge a console.
If we used the shovelware to judge consoles (or in this case, games you dislike but don't qualify as shovelware), the NES, Atari 2600, PS2, THE FREAKIN WII would all be considered abysmal failures.

In Japan JRPGs are made quite cheaply by small studios, typically. Square Enix and the Tales of games might be the ones we see in the West, but they're in the minority. The likes of Compile Heart and GUST are more common in Japan, and these are teams of a couple dozen, at most, employees. When people talk about JRPG support for a console in Japan (the PSP, for instance), they're actually talking about these games where the quantity is spectacular, not so much Final Fantasy.
Take a guess at the kind of business model these guys run on? Churning out cheap JRPGs on low price platforms. The PSP's huge success in Japan was because it was cheap as chips to develop for - especially once the PSN allowed retail downloads.
Guess which platform supports this business model now? Yes... that scary one... iOS. The iPhone, iPad and Android platforms are finally taking off in Japan (it was delayed compared to the west), and the developers in Japan are taking these platforms seriously.
Case-in-point - when Tecmo Koei acquired GUST it publicaly announced that GUST will be focusing heavily on bringing its games to mobile platforms. Square Enix set up a mobile publishing arm that is releasing cheap JRPG games at a scary rate on iOS. Spike Chunsoft (as in, the roguelike developer) dipped its first toe into the iOS market with the port of Baroque.
So no, I don't think the 3DS will become the JRPG powerhouse that the DS and PSP were in Japan. Not when there's such numbers of iOS devices out there and they're so cheap to develop for.
@Bankai - Yeah, that too. I came to realize that once the 3DS and then the Vita were announced. I'm sure it sucks for a lot of people, especially if you have no other interest in mobile platforms. If it eventually means lots of good games, I'll be happy, but so far it's meant a ton of crap with a few gems tossed in here and there. Same with that stupid browser gaming they got over in Japan.

And that's basically -2 since you're giving credit to a system for NOT having games. +2/0 is equal to 0/-2 (or at least in basic mathematics class, where they don't give a damn whether you write N/A or zero)
