So... long story short I decided to make mock ups of DS games running on the 3DS to see how different they'd look.

Here's an example using Kingdom Hearts: Re:Coded

Here's links to a few others.

There's more on my site(which is in my sig) if you want to check them out. So what do you guys think about how they look and what games do you think will be affected most.

EDIT: Also I hope this isn't too much self-promotion....

Why can't Nintendo do some stretchy-out thing with the same resolution like they did with the XL? Is it because the ratio of the top screen to the bottom is no longer the same?

The only options are to display it at the higher resolution(which we've seen in action) or to display the pixels 1:1 which would mean the DS games would be smaller on the screen which could make some games really hard to play. Unless you mean stretching the screen to be widescreen? That would be suboptimal.

The DSi XL's screen was the same resolution, just on a bigger screen. No stretching involved. The 3DS has a higher resolution than the DS, so stretching is the only option unless you'd like the games to display with a black border like GBA games did on DS, and GB games did on GBA.

You can't really represent size on a computer screen but you can represent resolution.

Here's what Echoes of Time(one of the comparisons I did) looks when it's displayed 1:1.

But keep in mind the 3DS screen is about the same size as the DS screen so it would look quite a bit smaller.

AFAIK the top screen is the same height but wider(to make it widescreen). Of course the DS games aren't widescreen so they will appear about the same size.

Hmm... I doubt the image size will be that big of a problem in 1:1 mode as far as visibility (if you've ever played a gameboy micro you'll know what I mean). But I can imagine it would make using the touch screen difficult. I wonder how blurry it will look when expanded. I'm not getting rid of my DS Phat anyways because I still enjoy my GBA games.

Stop complaining and GO PLAY GAMES.

slightly off topic but... this is what I thought of the next portable playing the next"New SMB" before the 3DS was on the radar

on topic... what's to know? they'll put black bars on the side shrugs no huge difference really. Also, it won't look anywhere near as blurry as the examples here because you guys are letting your image editing software apply smoothing to the scaling. If the videos of VC games on the 3DS can look as good as they do I'm sure DS games will look equally as sharp and colourful on the 3DS.

edit: also, look at this from 2:40

Well the images won't be as blurry because the screen is physically smaller but a user named Nuclear Muffin on Neogaf said when he tried a DS game on the 3DS that it was blurry compared to running on the original DS. It's not a major difference either way but I thought it would be a fun exercise.

Actually I think Kingdom Hearts is even helped somewhat by the blur!... well the action at least, the menus aren't.

Yeah, I agree. Its a little less bumpy looking and it looks a bit more natural. Despite the how bad the image looks on the health gauge.
