I've been seeing ads for this on youtube all week. Glad they're actually promoting it. It could sell quite well if they reach enough people.
Anyone else buying this to play it for the first time?
I've never played the game before. Actually, other than the Android port of the original DQ, I've never played one of these games for any significant length of time.
I still haven't got to play 7. Gonna go for this one first now. I prefer the visual style and full size characters of this one!
The locations seem more interesting too. DQ7 still has that vestigial 2D sense to it's world.
Got this 2 days early. Pretty cool.
Love it so far. It has a brilliant and distinctive character to it.
It also makes me a bit annoyed that traditional turn based JRPGs have kinda died out. There's really no reason for that to have happened. It's such a solid game formula.
Turn based RPGs have flourished on handhelds, and even home consoles like Wii U and PS4 get them once in a while. Persona 5 is the next really big turn-based RPG.
They're not dead. You're just not looking hard enough
Mostly dead in AAA gaming. Is what I should've said.
I meant in comparison to the SNES and PS1 era where turn based JRPGs were one of the biggest genres. Nowadays they're relegated to handhelds and more niche games.
How many examples have there been since FFX where a turn-based JRPG was one of the biggest console games of the year? Can't think of any.
While I was initially disappointed by the absence of stereoscopic 3D in this title, I feel like the game makes up for it with a colorful world and well-animated 3D character models. The full voice acting is definitely winning me over as well.

Dragon Quest XI on PS4 and Switch looks pretty darned amazing. I would consider that to be an AAA turn based RPG. It is highly likely to come west as well. Nintendo will push hard for it.

Honestly, that has more to do with the Japanese market preferring portable games, as far as I can tell. Consoles aren't as convenient, they cost more, and there's some social stigma tied to it for older gamers owning a console, from what I've heard. Outside of big names like Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy (Tales and Persona are "big names" in Japan, as well), it seems like most console RPGs are a pretty big risk if they don't sell well overseas now, or don't appeal almost cynically towards a niche audience...which I'll agree is a shame.
Back in 2008 I switched to being primarily a handheld gamer and the biggest reason was the RPGs. Between the DS and the PSP they had tons of JRPGs. However, I have noticed that as you get toward the end of life for a handheld it seems like the only games that come to it are RPGs. Last year I only bought two 3DS games that were not RPGs (Kirby Planet Robobot and Mario Maker 3DS). Looking forward, most of the games I am waiting for on 3DS this year are also RPGs. The exceptions being Poochi and Yoshi and Pikmin 3DS. I hope that Nintendo has at least one big non-RPG game lined up for the 3DS this holiday season.
I think I've bought 10 retail games for the 3DS that weren't RPGs or Zelda over the entire course of its life time, and the only ones I'm still considering picking up are Super Mario 3D Land, Kirby Triple Trouble, and Ace Combat...I've already rented the first two, I just was waiting for a price drop, at least for Kirby.
Just played this for a couple of hours. It's impressive with its almost fully voiced dialogue and clean, colorful art style. The music is chirpy and being able to see enemies on the map is nice.
With that said, the pop-in of environmental detail in this game is insane. I don't notice this as much in other games with more stuff on screen at a time, but it's really jarring for trees, bushes, patches of grass etc. to suddenly materialize when you're a foot away from them.
@Ralizah Yeah, I don't like what they did with the overworld, at least in what I've seen in vidoes. I mean, you still had pop-in before, but I don't think it was as much, and you could see stuff that was pretty far away...
@CanisWolfred The game is great overall, but this one issue is really noticeable. Oh well. It doesn't actually impact gameplay at all. Maybe it's due to the 3DS having memory issues?
Also, whenever Kalderasha talks, all I hear is this:
