It can probably only crop the image.

It DOES have a zoom feature. I don't have the link but I saw a video on the YouTube 3DS channel that shows zooming in the camera. It isn't a ton of zoom but at least a couple feet. Corbie was probably just mistaken because of the language barrier.

well it definitely doesn't have optical zoom and I don't see why anyone would bother with digital zoom so..........

For anyone unfamiliar, digital zoom is the same as if you took a small square of the picture you wanted, and stretched it to the original size. Basically useless unless you do not care about image quality.

This.

I remember my first camcorder proudly boasted 1000x digital zoom. It could zoom a single pixel captured by the CCD to the entire size of the screen. Useful. No filtering or anything. I disabled it straight away and stuck with the optical zoom, than you very much.

It has digital zoom. There's a lever that activates the Circle Pad for zooming in and other functions. True story.

Yep, I goofed and missed it. The 3DS camera does have a digital zoom, just not an optical zoom. Sorry about the misinformation.

Not really, Corbs. Digital Zoom, as others have explained in this thread, is not really zooming at all. It's closer to cropping - digital zoom is a marketing term. Given how poor the 3DS cameras already are... You won't be 'zooming' much.

For all intents and purposes the 3DS does not have zoom.

So I was right.

Is the camera quality good?

Eel

the quality is the same as the DSi Camera (which is not too bad, but it is not good either)

I have another question about photography...
Can you take in-game screenshoots of any game? or only some, like the AR games and nintendogs (because these are the ones i have seen doing it)

I would argue that it is bad by today's standards, but it works fine, especially for the small screens. From what I've seen, images taken on the 3DS displayed on a computer screen resemble camera technology from the early commercially available digital cameras. It's not anything to brag about but it keeps the costs down for our 3DS's.

Stop complaining and GO PLAY GAMES.

Hardy83

The DSi's camera was horrible. Most 10 buck cell phones have better cameras. The 3DS's isn't any different, which is sad. It should've been at the very least 1.2MP. 0.3 is just crummy.

I guess it's nice that it has digital zoom, but I doubt many will use it when images look like a blurry mess.

You've got to take into account that the cameras built into both the DSi and the 3DS weren't added for taking photographs - just like the microphone wasn't added for recording high quality recordings of your karaoke. They were added as input devices for games. Adding the functionality to take photos/audio clips from them was a logical step, but Nintendo have never claimed that these are supposed to be replacements for your cameras.

I only watched the first video, but as already stated here, it's only digital zoom. Rather than zooming in on the subject, it zooms in on the screen. It's more akin to stretching a digital picture larger; the quality is sacrificed doing this.

Exactly. You can "zoom" DSi photos in the same way so long as you have Photoshop (or any other photo software). The 3DS just makes this a little more instant in execution

And yeah, given the iPhone has a 8 megapixel camera or thereabouts, a regular pocket camera costs less than $100 and has 10 or 12 megapixels, and a Digital SLR has what, 14, 15 megapixel for a few hundred bucks, 0.3 cameras is easily eclipsed by just about anything, and everyone should have a better camera somewhere.

That said, as DiggerDan said, the 3DS cameras are not for taking photos

Corbs

Exactly. These cameras are more for game related tasks and the augmented reality. I've snapped a bunch of 3D pics with my 3DS and while they're fun to look at on the 3DS screen, there's not much else you can do with them.
