They don't harm(only if you don't attach it carefully) the system it's more for protection and style but i don't think you can add the circle pad pro or battery extender while you have one on your 3ds.
had one on my dsi and it's nice, gonna get one for my 3ds soon too:)
Not yet. I've been meaning to get one. My personal choice is hard plastic cases or silicone cases. I recommend looking at Hori. They do a clear plastic case and a black silicone one. I haven’t see any white silicone cases available in the US and all the white silicone cases I've seen in the UK aren't really white, there grey. Here is a black silicone case
I take very good care of my handhelds. (So much that I can't even stop worrying about it sometimes). So no. But I did get a zelda protective armor for it one time, but it felt very awkward. I don't really want a case for my 3DS, since I carry it in one of those Power A bags that stores the 3DS... Top security for me!

In my opinion, is it really necessary to have a case on a 3DS? I had armor on my dsi but that was because the console was very skinny. The 3DS on the other hand is bulky with a thick plastic shell. I don't think it would break if you dropped it.
I've had a case and screen protectors on it from day one. I learned my lesson from my previous handhelds, and conveniently a few days after I got my 3ds, my Mom dropped it into a puddle of mud. With this case on, there wasn't any real damage. Here's a pic.
It's a very thin case with a nice matte grip. It's not the best for shock absorbing, but it protects from scratches.
Just let it happen.
