Topic: Do 3ds' Graphics stand up to the wii?

I've recently been looking at some 3ds screens and noticing that the graphics are good, like really good. Are the graphics better or on-par with the wii? I could see this being a problem.

Why a problem??? Oh, you mean for the Wii? They are predicting the Wii to price drop to $99 this year , I think Nintendo will release info of a new console at E3 this year, if not a next generation console, at least a revision of the Wii (Eg. DS Lite, DSi, DSi XL compared to the 3DS which is next generation)

In comparison, in my opinion, yes. The 3D aswell as the crisp, clean graphics are beating up the Wii like a Thwomp.

Nah, I don't think the comparison is fair. The 3DS has fantastic graphics for a handheld, but it can have that because it renders everything at 1/4th of the resolution the Wii does. The 3DS does have to render stuff twice though, for the 3D effect. But as has been noticed in some games they will either have more effects or a smoother framerate with 3D off. Of course, on the small screen it will appear to look as good as or maybe even better than the Wii once developers get to know the hardware. But if a 3DS game would be scaled up on a 42" TV and then be compared to a similar Wii game, the difference would be obvious.

As for Mario Kart 3DS, it's probably still an early version which will be improved upon a lot with more detail and such. But it's still far from Mario Kart Wii when it comes to detail, level geometry, etc.

Then again, I have yet to experience the 3DS. Perhaps the two screens working together to produce the 3D effect will somehow show more detail which a still 2D picture of those games can't reveal. I can't wait to find out!

I don't think it technically has the power of the Wii but because it has the lower resolution on smaller screens, plus the shaders and other little details are aparently on 360, PS3 levels, It LOOKS on par or better than Wii. And that's all that really matters so its all good!

I think the 3DS has alot more potential then what we have seen. A lot of people said that the wii had bad graphics in the begining of it's life, but the more recent games on wii look pretty good. they look better then what people thought possibly on the wii. So i think the 3DS could start to have better looking graphics then the wii in about a year or so. The wii might have better graphics (technically as it seems) then the 3DS, but the 3DS does frekkin 3D with no glasses!!!

I believe the 3DS's graphical power is on par with the Wii's. It's even better because it's in 3D!

The 3DS can't even compare with The Gamecube's Graphics, let alone The Wii.

when I see a Fully ported Gamecube on The 3DS, then we'll see.

I could see it happening if they lowered the graphics quality, well, assuming they use an actual good looking game.

Well there's already a bunch of Wii ports like the two One Piece games and Combat of Giants(lol) and there's a lot of games using PS3/360 assets.

and yes I do think the graphics stand up to the Wii but the systems have very different strengths. The Wii's main strengths are its fillrate and polygon pushing power whereas the 3DS's strength is all about the shaders which because they're built in to the GPU don't take up much CPU power.

The other thing you need to remember is that split screen hits consoles hard. The 3DS won't have to deal with that. With Mario Kart Wii I'm fairly sure they stripped back the detail in tracks so that 2 player split screen ran at 60fps and 3/4player split screen ran at 30fps. They won't have to do that with the 3DS.

Also, given the size of the cartridges, 3DS games are going to be able to have much higher texture quality than N64 and DS games. We've seen that already. I'd say for the pixels it has, half those of the Wii (1/4 the res but in 3D), it's going to be very, very close to the Wii in what it can do. Possibly beyond in some ways.

The graphics are most certainly better than the DS's. It looks like it can push a ton more polygons than the DS could.

Food for thought: technically the 3DS is always doing split screen when in 3D mode because it has to draw the scene twice - one for each eye.

true... sadly I didn't think of that. Also, when the Wii does two player split screen its two 640x240 screens or four 320x240 screens. The 3DS only ever has to do two at 400x240. So the 3DS in 3D mode is basically doing what the Wii does with a horisontal split screen just with 62.5% less horisontal res!

There is room for disagreement, but "cant' even compare to The Gamecube's Graphics" (what's up with this capitalization?) is a rather absurd position to say the least. I've watched the gameplay videos and screenshots of RE: Mercenaries, and it looks a whole lot better than the same mode in RE:4 on the 'cube.

Now, there are certainly different criteria involved. It's possible that the GC could push more raw polygons, for instance (although by no means provable right now), but the shader effects, textures, and other details currently shown on the 3DS outpace the Gamecube in a number of ways, and this is without accounting for the additional effects 3D will have on the appearance. Even the DoA game looks smoother and crisper than I believe the GC would have been able to achieve.

Twitter is a good place to throw your nonsense.

I guess we'll find out if it can do lots of polygons when/if Pikmin 3DS happens. All we can say for sure now though is that it doesn't look to be too restricted in the polygon department given the games shown so far. Link in OoT 3D for eg has fingers which in itself shows that the 3DS is significantly more capable than the DS or N64 were. Why wouldn't it be pushing beyond what the GC could do? How many years ago was that?

edit:
I think this says a lot.... doesn't it?

A piece I did on my blog. Compares the Island Flyover section of Wii Sports Resort to PilotWings Resort. Basic conclusion is that Wii is doing that style a with a bit more detail.
I would be willing to make more in-depth comparisons across Wii and 3DS if I got a few requests (I would pick the games, though).
