Topic: Could someone explain Nintendogs to me?

I'm on the fence about whether or not I'd enjoy this on the 3DS. Are there any fans of the original out there? Could you describe why one would like this game and get lots of time out of it?

I'm traumatized by my fiancee buying My Zoo...

"Woof Woof"

now seriously.
The original games are very good. You get to adopt your dog(s), train them, pet them, feed them, etc.
The more you walk around town the more your dog can walk, the more items you find around.
You can teach your dog voice commands, the more you practice them the better your dog gets at them, etc.
Contests are fun and winning feels great.
The dogs themselves seem to scream at you "IM CUTE, LOVE ME" every time they look at you.

Obviously the game gets boring after a while, but it can be months of fun.

Famitsu gave a very good score to the new games: "The sheer fuzziness factor on all the pets is too cute. Watching them totter around in 3D is so calming, and the act of petting them has much more of a you-are-there feel to it. Keeping a dog and cat together gives you a huge number of must-see moments, and the ability to interact quickly and easily with other pet owners is great."

You take care of a virtual pet dog or cat.

I know someone who got Nintendogs a few years ago. He got bored of it pretty quickly. Wasn't much to do.

thanks for the words, I think as long as there is a sense of improvement or growth I'll be okay with it for a while.
could you describe the contests you mentioned for me?
and did I hear that your pets will actually recognize your face this time around and act differently? that seems to be a cool feature if you can really tell the difference between gameplay for you and a stranger.

it's a pet sim. just as you set aside a Tamagotchi eventually, you'll probably wind up setting Nintendogs aside too.

that's exactly what I'm afraid of. I'm just trying to gauge if there is enough growth and novelty in the game to make me play for a good long while. will I get so attached to my pets that I'd feel guilty for selling them to gamestop?

The three contests in the original are the Disk competition (you trow a disk for the dog to catch, you can train at the park), the Agility contest (you follow an obstacle course like the ones in real life dog contests, you can train at the gym) and the Obedience contest (make the dog do the required tricks, you can train at home)
My personal favourite is the Disk contest.

It has alot of Nintendo cameos. You can get a mini Mario Kart in which you drive around and your dog chases you.

In terms of content, i'd say it would last you till Zelda comes out.

This is a signature.

Was fun...but it got boring after a while...seems like there will be new features from the 3DS and stuff (AR, the StreetPass thing)...so I'm gonna give the series another chance with this one.

EDIT: Oh and an important note, throwing random objects at the puppies = fun. xD

heck that's good enough for me. i'm thinking this might be the only game I buy until the zelda/paper mario/mario kart/star fox/that sort of good stuff comes out.

I've recently got a real puppy. He's so much more fun than any pet sim could ever hope to be.

Do we even know when those other titles are coming out? I doubt the game will last you a month, but I could be wrong. I also doubt those other games are coming out before 3 months after the 3DS is released.

I can't explain it. I bought it, liked it for 6 months and after that I sold it.

Yeah, I have 3 dogs irl, so Nintendogs does nothing for me. It was kinda cool having the breed of one of my irl dogs on there, and naming it the same as my dog

But I mean... virtual bathing? virtual letting it out to use the bathroom? No thanks... Do that enough irl

No, but surely at least 2 of them by June. I feel like I'm falling into the trap of buying a game I don't want to tide me over on the new technology until the games I want come out, I also think that was Nintendo's plan all along.

Maybe you should rethink buying it right away. Maybe you have a friend buying it you could try out. Maybe he'll have a game or two you could see if you like and would enjoy enough to buy the system right away. Or you could just buy the system and be content that you are going to get bored of it after a short while; take it out to show people once in a while. Until the games you actually think you want come out. Compared to the games you want to like just because you need an excuse to buy a 3DS.

good advice, I could easily wait until June. Nintendogs interests me though that's why I want to hear people's feelings. I think I'll still go ahead and get the system though for the AR cards and camera and just play my DS games on it before the right game comes out if nothing else...

Alright, for me; i loved it but it got too much work (lazy lol) but i could never bring myself to sell it, even though it collects dust. they're still MY puppies. i'd recomend it.
