Topic: Controversal Opinion: Was Super Mario 3D Land the worst Mario?

Saying 3D Land is the worst Mario game is very harsh indeed. It was after all the first original 3D Mario platformer on a handheld. When comparing it to Mario 64, Sunshine or Galaxy, 3D Land doesn't stand a chance but taken for it is (ie a 3D Mario game on a handheld) I think its does the job. It is by no means a perfect game and does suffer a lack of originally at time but still a very good game.

Wait, wait, wait. Some people actually think 3D Land is the worst Mario game? Have they not tried any of the repetitive NSMB series after the DS one? Worst 3D Mario game? Possibly, but the worst Mario game out of all of them? Lol, not even close.

No. That would be NSMB2.

This. Should never of been released, it's almost pointless.

Yes.

Agreed. The worst part was them making coin collecting the main mechanic. What made them stop and say "Hey! Lets bring more attention to our dated and useless lives system by encouraging players to get 999 lives through monotonous coin collecting!" It's less of a lives system and more of a high score, except with all the fun removed.

Super Mario 3D Land was awesome. New Super Mario Bros 2 was truly terrible, and I have only played part 1 on the DS, so it's not like I was burned out on the series like some other people may be.

To be honest, and thats not even a fanboy opinion, ive yet to find a bad, not fun mario game in general.
Even NSMB2 is a game, i regularly come back to and have a blast with it.
3D Land is one of my most favourite mario titles.

Hey the DS one was good at the time (back when it was the only entry), plus they actually bothered to put in some cool minigames. Now its just about putting in as little as possible.

While it wasn't the best, there are worse Mario games.

My SD Card with the game on it is just as physical as your cartridge with the game on it.
I love Nintendo, that's why I criticize them so harshly.

Lack of originality? A game that actually made use of the 3D effect and has levels that are fresh is not original? Get real man.

After so long...I'm back. Don't ask why

I know, I'm not bashing the original DS game, I loved that!

Oh are we including Paper Mario games? Yeah Sticker Star was worse than all of the NSMB games. One of the most disappointing £30 purchases I've made in years.

I like 3D Land because it was the first 3D Mario that felt like Mario, Mario 64 and the like do not feel like Mario at all, are a completely different genre with Mario as the character.....

No, it's one of the best Mario games of all time.

I find that people only start these threads when they have died one too many times on a certain level, so therefore declare the entire game as 'The worst game they have ever played'.

It's not bad because it's hard. In fact, it was far too easy for the main campaign. The levels just felt bland, empty, and uninspired. And I like hard games, and others do to. Why else would Donkey Kong be popular?

I really liked super mario 3d land. Its not the kind of game that I usually play but I found it additive. Thats because it was and still is fun to play.

if you dont like it then dont play it. Unfortunately not every game can please each person.

I loved the 3D effect, it was what finally sold me on getting a 3DS, however I thought the game ran out of gas towards the end and became a tiny bit repetitive. Other than that i still think its a great game and is why I loved the pseudo-sequel that is 3D World!

It's one of the best for me. More fun than 3D world at least

I really don't like it. I cannot play it other than at snails pace because of 30fps.

Things that no matter how much practice I put in with 3D Land I couldn't do with 100% accuracy I could do straight away with 3D World.

Super Mario 3D Land isn't bad, better one of their more recent games. I'd honestly peg the worst without going into educatainly stuff (mario his missing, mario counting, typing, etc) stuff to me would likely be the first of the New Super Mario Bros titles. They just did so much wrong on that game I had to force myself to finish that one. 1/3 of the worlds of the game were locked unless you were micro mario and dodged the castle boss. The jump/motion physics in the game just blows, it's like all slippery and motion is off compared to any of the previous platformers. The stages aren't well done, they look and sound like mario, but the feels and style it could have been just any old generic boring platformer with some mario sticker/templates thrown on it. It was also quite short too in the big picture. A big big fail of the game was having to buy the right to save on a handheld game needing 3 coins to unlock a mushroom house or having to take down a mid or final castle which was a huge bad decision only fixed beating the game then you can save any time. The game also had the weakest set of power ups for the series on the whole I guess outside of SMB2 which mushroom aside has none.

Nope. New Super Mario Bros 2 is the worst Mario game ever. Copy and paste NSMB and add in tons of coins= a new and unique experience? I think not my good sir, I think not.

When we're talking about worst Mario here is it:

A) All Mario games including games like... Mario is Missing
B) just the 2D and 3D Mario games?

Super Mario 3D Land... it's a good game. Level themes are boring but there are quite a few fun levels to play. What I don't like about is are the simplified game mechanics. In 64 and Sunshine (I REALLY hope we'd have 3D Mario like those again one day, or just a new 3D platformer from Nintendo to fill that void) you could pull of a lot of different moves. Punching, diving, triple jump, spinjump etc. And moving was faster overall. I miss that. Simple is not the best.

It would be great if David Wise made soundtracks to all future Nintendo games.
