Many who deem 3D Land terrible compare it directly to the most successful entries. That's not a good way to measure it, since it's supposed to stand and speak for itself. It's more of a 'bad by comparison case' than anything. But, that doesn't mean it's flawless. The levels themselves sometimes really don't know what theme to use, and that's extremely important for Mario platformers: themed levels. 3D Land had some very random and unfitting levels, and even by itself, these made the game look uncreative at times. On other parts, ideas were left underused or overused - the entire level design in general is highly inconsistent in quality and game flow.
That said, I don't like 3D Land. Not because of weak designs, lack of ideas, or anything, but because of the insane linearity of the levels. I'm not a fan of linear 3D environments, and this game is exactly that: a gigantic, single line.
As far as 3D mario's go, easily the most uninspired, uncreative and borrowed.
It's a fun game no doubt, boasting quick zippity controls that weren't present in galaxy 1 & 2, but it's a far cry from actually feeling NEW.
It certainly felt new to me! Seeing as we've never had a 3D Mario that used the actual Super Mario Bros gameplay mechanics!
NSMB2, it's just another NSMB clone. Variety comes via DLC which even though I really like the concept of DLC (Mario Kart 8's DLC is the best I've seen for any game), I don't like how its applied here.
I agree with those thoughts, TC, but it definitely isn't the worst Mario game overall. 3D Land is still a great game- maybe the worst of Mario's 3D platformers, though. Apart from 64 (which feels too dated to me), I like every other 3D Mario platformer I've played more, and the only one I haven't played is Sunshine.
To be honest I really enjoyed both 3D World and 3D Land, maybe even more than Galaxy. I really like the formula introduced by 3D Land, and I'd like to see it tried and perfected again, since it's surely more fresh and fun than NSMB.
@SuperMalleo I agree. Super Mario 3D Land is my favorite 3DS game period! The level design, the aesthetics, the gameplay and also the replay value just make up for it!
My only wish is that the game should've had DLC in it........heck even 3D World I believe doesn't too.......and that's a shame!
Super Mario 3D Land is an amazing platformer for a handheld, in retrospection it could have used a bit more variety, but it was the first go around.......I do believe they should make a sequel for the 3DS,......as far as 3D World, again, what a stellar title.
NSMB2 is a very bland and midiocre 2D platformer, I'll give it that, it was a let down.....NSMB U is saved by the depth of its world map and solid platforming.

I don't know if you feel the same way, but I think Galaxy titles are probably the better overall games, but due to its layout and design, 3D World has superior replayability.

3D World also has the multiplayer advantage. It's where that game truly shines. The difference in fun between 3D World single and multi is almost as big as the difference between Mario Kart single and multi.
So Anakin kneels before Monster Mash and pledges his loyalty to the graveyard smash.
Want a game with no soul? New Super Mario Bros. 2.
Check out my YouTube channel if you love gaming, and Nintendo (especially Metroid) I think you'll enjoy my videos. :)

Why would that be a controversial opinion? For me it was the worst 3D Mario but not the worst in Mario platform series. That honor goes to one of the 2D games, maybe something like New Super Mario Bros 2 (technically better than the first NSMB but felt too much like an expansion pack, too easy, rather boring levels etc.).
It would be great if David Wise made soundtracks to all future Nintendo games.
