We might see another version of the add-on not by Nintendo. I'm still hoping for a version under the ABXY buttons.

That's impossible. The slide pad and buttons aren't just what you see on the outside, they have internal mechanisms.

The 3DS 'slide pad' looks like a bulky piece of rubbish; I'd hesitate to buy for a home console controller, never mind a handheld. It's also making the rumours of a 3DS 'not-so-lite' more likely, something that would severely annoy me and every early adopter of the handheld out there.

It's weird because Nintendo's always done incredibly well with its handhelds; no matter how badly the N64 or Gamecube did commercially, they always had their solid GameBoy/DS franchises to keep them going.

With the 3DS, it's been a bit of a disaster, mostly due to Nintendo trying to get third party support and so not focusing on first party support, which is one of the main reasons I even buy Nintendo stuff anyway.

A changing of the old guard needs to be done, really. Shigeru Miyamoto has created some amazing and incredibly successful stuff; Zelda and Mario to say the least, but nowadays he thinks Nintendogs and Wii Music is what the industry needs.

You're only as good as your last game; just look at Peter Molyneux. Back in the 90s he was a gaming legend, with his games very highly acclaimed by most who played them, accredited with contributing hugely to the industry as we know it today, but when you think of Molyneux you don't think 'Syndicate,' you think 'Fable III.' Which as we all know was blam!.

I think Miyamoto especially has been given too much power at Nintendo and has in the process made some bad decisions; at the end of the day he's a game designer and should have remained one, not creative director of everything and practically the shadow-president of the company, along with Iwata too seemingly making some bad calls.

Well, at least they've managed to secure a Monster Hunter game for the 3DS.

It's good Nintendo's getting a MH game on the 3DS as it will be a system seller and in the end, mean more games developers get behind the console, but it's a bit silly that they've practically had to appease Capcom by making an add-on that will damage the 3DS brand.

The only way I can see those who bought a 3DS early not going on the warpath when a successor is announced just six months after system launch is if Nintendo give those who bought the 3DS pre-refine the newer model for free or for a very low price; I can't see that happening.

is this addon by Nintendo or Capcom?

It's a Nintendo thing, most likely developed in conjunction with Capcom rather like the Classic Controller Pro.

According the Famitsu that's exactly the case. I think Capcom only agreed to but Tri G on the 3DS if they could replicate the CC Pro and Nintendo thought it was worth it in exchange for Monster Hunter. Can't say I disagree.

If anyone was wondering the circle-pad is that white thing and, as you can see, it literally is up against the back of the unit. Under where people are saying the circle-pad should have been the battery sits (and people complain it's low capacity!) and there aren't many other spaces that can be filled.

I guess they could have dropped DS compatibility, made the cartridges smaller and used micro-SD cards instead of SD cards. Maybe then they could have fit a circle pad by lying the battery along the top.... or something. I think what I'm trying to say is that if they had done the dual analogue from the start they would have had to get rid of something else.

I'm willing to bet this thing will go over just in a way that's like the N64's Expansion Pak meets Wii Classic Controller. They'll release it separately, put out a few games that make use of it, and then bundle it later when a key game comes out that absolutely requires it.

However, If Nintendo were smart, they should start replacing the included charging cradle with this thing in the current 3DS model as soon as they can, and then for the early adopters hold a promotion online to send them out for free similar to the Wii remote jackets after the whole wrist-strap fiasco. Finally, after the promotion, release them for cheap for the less informed owners, or used console owners who purchase down the road. I believe a strategy like this would probably be the best for them to save face.

This of course, is ignoring the possibility of a redesign, which should be about announced a year off at least if previous patterns release hold true.

Really? A thick add-on to the right side? It seems uncomfortable to me. Really, it just doesn't fit.

Nintendo is getting way out of touch with its core audience and consumers. What are they thinking?

The Classic Controller is used for any game that requires a second analog stick and more traditional controls. And it's required for most VC games.

Opening your 3DS like that? For shame. You just voided the warranty, now Nintendo won't ever repair it.

The PS Vita has 2 analog sticks, and that system is crammed with tons of tech.

That's not my 3DS in the photo.

Also the Vita is about one and a half the size, a lot bigger even with the 2nd analog attached to the 3DS.

I think the add-on will be a lot like motion plus, not essential for all games, and packed in with games that require it. However, anyone who thinks this makes the machine look good in any way is just kidding themselves. For practice, try playing your 3DS with the supplied cradle attached. It hardly screams portability.

The Vita really is that big?

At least it will have a comfortable grip. Curved edges > squared edges

I'm still sceptical about it, and I think it could backfire spectacularly but as someone with massive hands(I can fit the 3DS in one hand when closed) the attachment looks quite comfortable... I really hope it is at least comfortable to hold. It also shows that Nintendo's willing to go to great lengths to get third party support, which is nice.

Well the attachment, mercifully, does appear to have rounded edges... also I suppose it depends on how the 3DS sits in it.

I was referring to the Vita having a comfortable grip.
