All the hype happened in 2002 and 2003 If you haven't played them, now is better than then, if you ask me.
Since everyone is discussing the series, my opinion is that Pokemon started losing its touch, right after Ruby and Sapphire came out. Diamond and Pearl were good games, too, but Pokemon was already 10 years old by that time, and alot of the "magic" and excitement from Pokemon was had for me when Pokemon Yellow, Gold, Silver, and Crystal were the new games.
Gold and Silver introduced the radio, berries, phone, rematches, Pokemon hold items, more sidequests, and had the biggest world of any other Pokemon game, since it included Kanto, too. It's my opinion that they never matched up to that game.
I'm excited (because gen 3 is the best and my favorite gen) but because I've played it before I'm not looking for new info like I was for X/Y though I hope GameFreak have fixed the damn engine so it has a more stable frame rate.
I've never played the 3rd gen so I'm pretty excited to see what all the hype is about (most of my friends who brought me back to the series love that gen above all others). The announcement also got me back into playing Pokémon X as I had taken a long break from it. For now I'm just focusing on breeding, training and battle maisoning. It's weird, I played a whole bunch when I got it and got to the point where I could really start breeding competitive pokémon quickly then I just kinda stopped playing for months.
if they show contests in 3D and an actual useful use for the already awesome secret bases, my hype will go over the top, but until then I'll stay mostly quiet about it.
goodbyes are a sad part of life but for every end there's a new beggining so one must never stop looking forward to the next dawn

I still don't know to what degree I should be excited for this game, the PR's been all over the place and they've been abusing the word "new" in regards to this game. I mean, when they first revealed this game they called it a "fresh take on Ruby and Sapphire", and then shortly afterwards Nintendo said it was a "full remake". And then with the recent CoroCoro, they have a hint of "new Pokemon"... on the page where they're talking about Mega Metagross. I can't tell if this game is RS + Mega Evolutions and the usual other minor touches or if they're actually taking some liberties with this game that would actually improve the experience (most notably with the Pokedex, but also with region design and storyline). And it's much harder for me to get excited for a copy/paste of a game that I've played before when they're are all sorts of problems in the original game design that they could fix if they took a more modern approach, but they seem to refuse to do so.
I think it's because a lot of people point at Gen 3 to be the worst, so seeing a remake of it has those same people very iffy on it. Imagine if we were to get a Other M HD remake xD personally I didn't wanna see hoenn again but I'm open to the games as I think they will fix a lot of the issues I had with the original

The biggest reason behind the 3rd gen hate was that it was the only generation to not have backwards compatibility, and that issue has pretty much gone away at this point.

Actually the reason why it was the most hated was because of it's difficultly.. I'm playing pokemon emerald for the first time.. and it's freakin hard.. everything just supersonics, focus engery crit.. it's entirely luck based.. and of course 50% of the entire map is surfing.. with every five steps having a wild encounter.. and no affordable repels yet..

I was not aware that your opinion was exactly the same as the rest of the fanbase's.
Or is it because people are getting burnt out on Pokemon games?
That's where I'm at. Even though Hoenn is one of my favorite regions and has my favorite generation of Pokémon, it's releasing way too soon following X/Y for me. X/Y pretty much drained me. With the extra Super Training, it took me longer than usual to beat the Elite Four. I haven't even bothered with whatever the post-game may be let alone try to develop a more competitive team.
"The secret to ultimate power lies in the Alimbic Cluster."
The only reason the gen three games feel harder now is because they were the last games in the series that used the archaic and nonsensical old attack type categories (seriously, ghost is physical and dark is special?). So it feels harder because most pokemon that are useful now were bad then.
People also hated the games because they were pretty much a full reboot for the series, there was no backwards compatibility so all that time you spent training your charizard in blue and completing the pokedex in gold went to complete waste. Many players were left with a bitter attitude towards the new games because of that.
I was pretty disappointed considering how all the crazy stuff you could do with S/G/C back in the day was the coolest thing ever as a 10 year old.
I had similar feeling towards Advance Wars 2 and Rogue Squadron 3. Absurd amounts of extra content make me happy (instead of just making a needlessly long game with filler because reasons, looking at you open world games)
Oh there was also that, not all the features introduced in the second generation came back.
Most of the features they got rid of in 3rd gen were replaced in some way. Pokegear was replaced with the Pokenav, the berries they got rid of were replaced by new ones which did the same thing plus more, most of the Apricorn Balls were replaced and they added new, more useful ones like the Repeat and Timer Balls. The only things that weren't replaced were the Day/Night system and transfers.
I'd argue that later generations were even worse with this, because some of the things they got rid of were more useful and weren't replaced. This is especially true of 5th gen which removed not only the usual gimmicks like the Poketch and Secret Bases, but also berry trees and even trainer rematches, and in turn offered few notable improvements in terms of content and gameplay mechanics. They weren't just replacing regional gimmicks like most regions do, they were stripping content for the purposes of an unwarranted "fresh start" for the series.

That would be 6th gen who removed ALOT of things..
The most notable is a way of transfer, which eventually pokebanked fixed but took forever for us to get it... No contest, no bases, nothing like that.. they removed ever lasting weather from gen 5 abilities.. ALOT of move's base powers and accuracy was changed for worse. No form of battle subway or anything like that.. just battle maison which is overly difficult and full of hax. list goes on.
