just saw the announcement...
I still cant believe it. This is a dream come true for me.
I always wanted this app on my DS, but to do so, i had to use a hack, so... didnt do it after all. I wanna keep my nintendo consoles clean.
for dirty stuff, i give it all to microsoft and my pc.

so, anyone had experience with this art program ? how close is it to photoshop ? or corel draw ? or painter ?

I've actually used the previous version with a flashcart. It did not burn my DS Lite up as far as I am aware. Anyway - the program is nothing like Photoshop, Corel Draw or even Painter and don't get your hopes up with that.

Colors! is like a color palette, coupled with two brush types (round "hard" and round "soft"), a brush size regulator and paint coverage slider. That's all. There is no undo, no layers, no advanced effects of any sort, no vector support and nothingelse beyond what I've named. Just you, white board and your imagination. The software allows you to sort of "playback" the entire painting process step by step, but that's it.

Additionally - the version for 3DS will be somewhat inferior to the original homebrew as Nintendo removed the pressure level sensing capabilities from the DSi, DSi XL and 3DS. So basically you will need to manually adjust your brush all the time. I personally do not understand why they decided to cut that...

I hope it adds features to make up for no pressure as mentioned. And hopefully, art academy 3DS makes it out with improvements over the original.

no pressure level ? talk about a wrong idea... lets hope the button shortcut will be present, like L and R for pressure control.

so its more of a speed painting rather than a more pro appraoch. that makes me wonder how much time was spent on the avatar art we saw in the article.
I didnt even though of vector design for the 3ds. it could be cool, but illustrator does the just so well i dont feel working with vectors on something else.
but... no layers and undo will be a pain sometimes. oh well.

i might go for art academy too, but an eshop title would be much better. always accessible, no cart switch when youre on another game... didnt find any art academy 3ds yet. is it true ?

I'd prefer Art Academy too. I've heard great stuff about it, but Colors! 3D sounds lackluster.

colors! 3d looks like an upgraded note application, but i didnt find much infos about it. ill wait for it anyway. the fact it will be an application makes it more useful than art academy is to me.

but art academy on eshop would be an instant buy.

Actually I think the 3DS is pressure sensitive. People have been saying the piano in Nintendogs + Cats uses pressure sensitivity. Here we go: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r3o3NS538sc

Basically, Microsoft paint or deviant art's Google chrome app, the free version..

They could use the gyroscope to help use pressure sensitive brushes though.

What? No undo? Dang, the one feature I hoped for more than anything else was being able to undo as many steps as possible, like piant.net.
This is incredibly disappointing news, and may end up being a deal breaker for me.

Well that was the previous version. Colours! 3D DOES have an undo/redo button. That is, unless you're talking about the app on DSi.

Awesome Colors is getting a commercial release! For those who don't know what this app is capable of, take a gander at the brilliant official gallery.

Donwloaded this one today and I gotta say, everyone here with a 3DS needs to get to the eShop this instant and buy this application! Its absolutely brilliant! You get so much for just 7 dollars. Painting with 5 different layers of 3D depth is amazingly cool and a lot of fun. The tools are very simple giving you options to make you're stroke size any thickness or opacity. You can create some seriously impressive pieces with this software as evidenced by the built-in online gallery which is another huge feature. You can view newly posted paintings and favorite or even leave comments on or copy them. You can also post your own pieces for the community to view. Another feature which I have yet to try is the multi-player painting where 2 people via local wireless can paint on the same canvas. While I haven't personally experienced this one yet, it sounds really fun and I hope to give it a whirl at some point. Overall, a very, very impressive app that I hope many will consider. The team behind this absolutely deserves every penny for their efforts! I hope to see many of you around the gallery soon!

SO I just bought this on a whim and had to go to work, hope that we get some more impressions rolling in here soon. What do the rest of you guys think? I won't be able to play with it until later on.. lol. I just heard a little about it in the past and had to take the plunge!

Just a couple of questions...

Why is the topic for Colors! 3D in the 3DS forum and not in the 3DSWare forum? Just curious... It gets confusing when things are in different categories without explanation! This isn't a 3DS Nintendo app, surely...?

Also, the program, upon launch, keeps telling me that there is 'not enough room on the SD card' so some of you with full SD cards may want to wait until you get a higher capacity card. I have tons of room on my card and apparently its still not enough! How much space do you need to make ONE painting???

Argh.

Hmmmm...How odd...Exactly how much space is free on your card? I've got like 20GB open myself. I think it must take a lot of data for one painting since it saves what is essentially a video of the painting being created from start to finish. Just get a 32GB SanDisk SD Card and never worry about space again!

It depends how much you paint, the file it will use for saving your project can get big depending on how much you draw/rub out as it records everything so you can playback drawings.

That's not necessarily true! When I even OPEN the program, and I select "new painting" it immediately says I don't have enough space, and I know I have quite a bit of space left. I even deleted some big apps/games on the card. WTH!

In Colors! 3D can paintings be saved and uploaded via the SD card to one's laptop/computer?
