I might get it since it supports some of the games I'm planning to get. I don't care how it looks, as long as it makes the system bulkier, I can stop using the charging cradle as a handle grip. The 3DS itself is too cramped for me.

I'm just going to wait for a redesign. I'm kicking my current model to the curb as soon as on is released.

Which will most likely be out in 2 years and will more likely Not feature a second circle pad because all games don't require it for use. Don't you think that there might not be a dual analog revision? I'm also holding out for a revision, but thats for an XL version only. After playing with the DSiXL (Best DS version IMO), I don't care if any handheld would fit in my pocket or look sleek, just make it comfy to use with a large screen and were all set.

I actually think a redesign is certain to have it. It was an oversight that it doesn't have one, the attachment is awkward and the competition will have one that is as smooth and comfortable as a home console controller. Redesigns are all about improvements and this one is obvious and it's not expensive to add. In a redesign they can add this while not blocking the cart insert and place the buttons and stick in a more comfortable setting. Unless you have little girl hands the 3DS as isn't that comfortable as is, let alone now having to reach around plastic to reach the right trigger and fumble for the buttons in an unfamiliar way when your thumb comes of this stupid piece of crap. Two sticks is a no brainer on a redesign. They owe it to their following just like they owe it to us to fix the dumb design flaw where it scratches people's widescreen if they close hard or many times. I'm gentle with mine but even if I wasn't I should be able to close the darn thing quickly without worry of scratches. This is a portable device after all. Speaking of portable, how many other portables do you know of with a three hour battery life? Sticks, screen and battery. Get it done Nintendo!

Only thing I can really say is if they do decide to to design a remake is have the size be about what the DSi XL is or better, and definitely round off the corners a bit more; In other words kinda enlarge the rounded areas where corners would be, so as to eliminate corners altogether because that's actually 1 of the current problems I have with the 3DS (big hands, semi-small handheld), setting aside how the Wii remote held sideways basically feels like holding a brick. However, considering they hinted a few months back that the circle pad pro could be a good workaround for controls in Kid Icarus: Uprising, I think it's a safe bet I'll be getting this. After seeing the video and how the 3DS fits inside it and all, I don't think I'll be have too much of a problem with it.

Tch... If Nintendo knew they were gonna want 3rd Party support they shoulda included a second circle pad on the system itself in the first place.... There was enough space for it ta hold, just move the power button to the area of the home, start and select buttons.

If only it were that simple. You can't just re-organize the outside of an electronic device and have everything else inside still work properly; in fact the main reason why the 3DS's stylus is placed where it is is because that was where there was room within the 3DS to hold it, and the amount of room to hold it was less than an ideal stylus length, so they made it telescopic to compensate for that. Also, the reason the majority of a 3DS's memory his held within an SD card is probably due to it being more space-efficient to use an SD card system than a large internal hard drive for memory. So, the 3DS's innards were cram-packed from the get-go, so Nintendo probably decided to skip out on the 2nd pad, thinking that the Touch Screen could emulate a second analog stick, so they decided to run the risk of alienating 3rd party publishers with the lack of a second analog stick (and to keep costs on the system down as well, presumably). Chances are it'll be a few years before we see a redesign with a built-in 2nd Circle Pad, and even if we do, it may very well still be a 3DSXL.

Exactly.

My thumb hurts

I'm going to have to get this tough, the very thought that my 3DS is no longer the most powerful handheld in the world will convinse me to buy.
Also, am i the only one who thinks this... thing will come with a system update? Easier to use Home menu, less annoying to scroll through Mii Plaza (Why Mario Kart 7, Why?), maybe even put in a non-AR Face Raiders.
I'm sure i'll get used to it on compatible software, but older stuff... gulp.

Video Games and I are gettin' old (And we still haven't walked in the glow Of each others majestic presence!)

What is the J files you may ask? Why only the biggest fad of 2023! :D

Ok i admit that that idea of a non-AR Face Raiders is not likely and not fun, but some minor tricks in menus and bilt-in apps wouldn't be a bad idea. They would work like normal without it but maybe put things like one pad could select an app and the other could scroll, not that useful but nice to have. System update isn't the right word, more like just added functions. I'm not putting my hopes to high for that ether.

Devs could just get creative and add a second analogue stick to the touchscreen.

that doesnt work on smartphones. why should it work on the 3DS?

Never played Dead Space on the iPhone/iPad, I take Fine example of how touchscreen controls work perfectly when some effort is actually put into it. I only came up with the idea after playing SM3DL - the simple camera controls are within easy reach [bottom right-corner] of the touchscreen. Having a virtual stick there would only take up 1/4 of the bottom screen and, for me, don't feel all that uncomfortable (give it a try).

So when will the Circle pad pro be released in different colors? I can't believe they don't sell a blue one since both black and blue 3DS was available from launch >_<

Here are a few things you should know about the Circle Pad Pro, presented in handy bullet point form:

  • The device is just as awkward looking as you might expect. The good news, however, is that it's relatively light and actually feels moderately decent in your hands.
  • Gripping the expanded 3DS to play games is trickier. Your impulse is to rest the bottom of the expansion at the base of the palm of your hand. Depending on your hand size, this will force you to awkwardly angle your fingers to reach the L/R and ZL/ZR buttons. It hurts. It sucks. I ended up shifting the system higher in my hand, allowing for better access to the shoulder buttons.
  • Reaching the four face buttons (ABXY) isn't difficult but is slightly more cumbersome than it ought to be. The distance is just outside what I'd consider reasonable. Most genres won't be impacted by this, though I could see some more timing-based games impacted.
  • The 3DS fixes into the Pro shell simply through rubber grips along the inside of the cradle. There are no fasteners or clasps, though you shouldn't worry about the system being loose - it's a very, very snug fit.
    * The headphone jack is exposed, but the cart slot is not. If you want to change games, you'll have to remove the shell.
  • Infrared communication is used between the Pro and the 3DS itself. Not that this is a huge issue, but there you go.
  • One of the bigger issues I have with the Pro, aside from its ridiculous aesthetic, is that the feel of the two Circle Pads is different. The pad on your system does not have the same movement resistance that its counterpart has. I've tested a couple Pros now, and have seen the expansion-based device feel both more resistant and more fluid. It's hard to say if that was a result of frequent use or variation in manufacturing. Regardless, it's a bit annoying.

So I have to remove the CPP just to switch game cards!? This seals the deal for me in passing on this fugly add-on.

The CPP is slightly smaller than the CCP that was included with Monster Hunter on the wii but the build quality and the feel of it are very similar. Its comfortable to play and even when attached to the 3DS it is still smaller than a PSP. Didnt think It would be as portable but when im wearing casual, comfy fit jeans the pockets are big enough but usually I put my 3DS on the inside of my coat pocket.
I prefer using standard controls with Resident Evil Revelations only because they are the same as Resident Evil Mercenaries controls but if I wasnt the CPP controls work well, infact I hope they make it possible to play Splinter Cell 3D with the CPP because that game would really benefit from it.

As a control pad it is a nice optional piece of kit. I dont think that I would like to have to use it because I dont think it would work well for all games but I can really imagine myself using it for Monster Hunter. It will feel exactly the same as playing the wii version.

So, your comment on the article is linked to this. You sure planned this out well. Well, are you doing it? Or were you joking? You're not serious, right? You really would spend $20 to beat this thing to a pulp?

Oh, and will Nintendo make this thing usable as the A,X,B,Y buttons for when it's in use. Splinter Cell (3DS), and MW3 (DS) could benefit greatly if a system update added the functionality.

Oh, and if you destroy this, I wish you luck trying to win a Call of Duty: MW4 online deathmatch. Chances are, you'd greatly regret beating it to a pulp with a hammer. I couldn't imagine how easily I could score a headshot on someone without a Circle Pad Pro. Sniping would be ideal with it. The all-out approach might be better without it. Depends on the motion control sensitivity. If it's like Starfox 64 3D, you'd be dead meat. In Resident Evil Revelations, you'd have a chance.

I don't care how it looks, as long as I can play my games I'm fine.

My SD Card with the game on it is just as physical as your cartridge with the game on it.

For such an ugly device, it sure feels nice to use. Proving the well worn saying that you shouldn't judge a book by its cover. I can't decide if there's a difference between the CCP circle pad and the actual 3DS one. I think maybe there a slight difference in the how far the stick slides in each direction. I like the shoulder buttons. I like that it comes with a wrist strap. I like that I can plug the AC Adapter into it with it still connected to the 3DS. It's slightly annoying have to remove it CCP fromt he 3DS to swap games, but with so few games currently supporting it, I'm not sure it's going to be much of an issue. By the time this is a fully supported device the 3DS XL will probably be out with this built into it. I don't find the ABXY buttons hard to reach at all. Overall, a big thumbs up.

Has anyone tried playing DS games with this? For instance, can a DS first person game be played via the two analogs and with the Pro's shoulder buttons? I want to know if I could potentially use this to play Metroid Prime Hunters.

No, it is only compatible with 3DS games and only those specifically designed to use it. For example, you can't use the Pro with 3DS games like Super Mario 3D Land or Mario Kart 7.

I would also like to add that the CCP gives me major hand ache so my review is now a shaky thumbs up.
