Topic: Circle Pad feature

A while ago I sent an email to Nintendo asking them whether or not we'll be able to use the circle pad for DS games, as this would make playing games like Super Mario 64 DS easier. This was my reply:

Hello,

Thanks for contacting us. I can confirm that the Nintendo 3DS will be compatible with all previous Nintendo DSi and Nintendo DS games except those which required users to insert and accessory into the Game Boy™ Advance slot of the Nintendo DS or DS Lite system.

When played on the Nintendo 3DS, these older games will function exactly as they did on previous Nintendo DS systems. This means they will not appear in 3D or be compatible with any of the new features of the Nintendo 3DS, like the slide pad.

I hope this information is helpful.

Now the 3DS FAQ says we WILL be able to use the circle pad.

So my question is: Who's right? Nintendo or Nintendolife?

I'm pretty sure I've seen an actual video of someone playing Soul Silver on a 3DS and they were using the Circle Pad. Obviously this Nintendo rep either knows very little or this auto-response hasn't been updated in a while. You can tell because they refer to the Circle Pad by its old name, the Slide Pad.

You know how you can use the analog stick on a GCN pad or CC for NES games? It works exactly like that. Movement will still be limited to 8-directions (not 360 degree movement with variable speed), just like the d-pad.

I posted my question in the 3DS FAQ comments section and Corbs answered with this:

I'm pretty sure this is the same video bboy2970 said he saw. So Nintendo was wrong on this one.

If you skip to 2:30 that's where he mentions it and shows this. Thanks Corbs!

Yep! That's the one! Good thing Nintendo was wrong or else I would be totally pissed! There are a couple DS games I plan on going back to just because of the analog control!

EDIT: Also, are you still interested in play-testing that game for me? I never got a reply from you in the thread...

Like Mario 64 DS? I really wanna see how it plays with the pad.

i don't think they were so much 'wrong' as they were 'not quite clear enough'. they did answer your question, it's just not the exact question you'd been asking. :3
and heck yeah, i'd definitely be interested in seeing how SM64DS controls with the circle pad... might be worth actually busting it back out, haha

Sorry to double post, but yes I am interested. I never checked back on that thread, I was actually waiting for an email reply. D:

EDIT: Guess I didn't double post.

@Tristen: yeah, there was apparently a problem where I didn't receive emails from people. The demo is all ready. If you wanna drop me a 2nd email that would be great! Just so you don't have to back-track, its: bboy2970@ya...

I am so glad that you can use the circle pad on DS games. I probably would have kept my old DSi without it.

armoredghor

you can use it for super mario 64 DS but I doubt they modified the original to 'support' analog controls so it probably will still only move in 8 directions.

Indeed, it will just emulate a digital input, not suddenly add analogue control to existing games.

That's why I want the 3DS in my hands ASAP.
