That one of Grasstown is too bad for my mind to comprehend.
Wait, that's not a screenshot of a default environment that came with their 3D rendering software?!
Seriously, that's abysmal. The 3D effect may well add some depth, but no way in hell is it going to add character.
THANK you!
@Tbd We're honestly not complaining just to complain. I'm not that kind of guy, and as someone who absolutely adores Cave Story, I want to like this game. I see potential, but I don't see anything that should/reasonably could be released to the public by June.

and again, i'd be genuinely surprised to see this game hit before next June, much less within this year's launch window, haha. there's all kinds of stuff that could go down within that timeframe. still gonna give 'em the benefit of the doubt. :3
also, Corbie informed us in chat this morning that Tyrone told him those screenshots were from a couple months ago. take that as you will.

If it includes the older version, I'll buy this one and play it in 3D for the sake of it. And if it's possible, in the 3D version, I'll play as the Prinny as soon as he's available .
Wait a minute! You can really play as a Prinny in Cave Story 3D? You really can?

Ah, well that does make me feel a bit better. It's odd though; those who got to play a demo of the game upon its announcement said that they didn't even have a 3D model for Quote in the game yet (they had the 2D sprite in place of it) which means they were just holding out on the press apparently. (very possible, especially if they weren't satisfied with the current quote model)

It's likely. This is being published by NIS, publisher of Dissega and the Prinny PSP series.
Remember: This game has been in development for quite some time. I assume this would have been the PSP version that got cancelled in 2006-2007. They only started to actually work on it recently, so I read.
The grassland environment looks like a 'place' holder to me. The concept art shown looked so much better than what is being shown in those screenshots, so I'm guessing the final product will significantly look better. I remember that post someone made and how they showed the map layout and how beautiful it looked.

No offense intended when I point this out, but it's pretty much always the case with video games that the concept art looks several orders of magnitude better than the actual game. It's due to the concept art not being subject to the technological limitations of a console.
Its not horrible but it doesn't look that great either. I really doubt it will get much better looking also since they are already showing screens, at best maybe the lighting will be better.
In a time of universal deceit, telling the truth is a revolutionary act.

Chicken's right, unfortunately. Though considering these screenshots look nothing like the concept art, I'll bet the presentation takes at least takes a couple steps forward.

I'm just a purist, TBD. Glad those are months old, though; if the final graphics were not significantly better it would be reason enough for me to not make a purchase.
Still think the model looks terrible, Kid_A. Unless they went back to the drawing board like you suggest they may have, I would prefer a sprite, regardless of how out of place it might look.
On a positive note, the Egg Corridor looks decent.

Oh yeah, I know that. Dunno what I was thinking when typing that part up (heck, I'm majoring in Game Art @_@), but I could have sworn I've heard that was the actual design- maybe I misread something- I dunno. But I'm hoping the final product is as close to the concept art as it can be when it comes to details.

Frankly, the fact that they're using 3D models and environments is baffling to me. If they would have spruced up the pixel art, added more layering effects and paralax scrolling (that's a thing right?) this game would look stunning in stereoscopic 3D.
Also, is anyone else worried about how well this thing is going to control with the circle pad?

Also, afaik it's not even confirmed to work with the Circle Pad yet. The early demos use the Control Pad. Doubt they would omit such an obvious feature in the end, though; could work with the 3D curving environment depth stuff.
Hey that's not half as bad as I was expecting. Could definitely use some work though, haha. I wouldn't be too annoyed if this one got a billion delays if it meant more work and polishing.
