I ask because I have a defective system and I want to just return it to the store instead of mailing it to Nintendo. I'm currently knee deep in a game and I don't want to wait. I have a feeling the answer is no ...

Of course you can. You can transfer from and to whatever 3DS system you want.
Just keep in mind, that you can only transfer once per 7 days.
Other than that, no problem whatsoever. Just start the transfer app and pick "send from this system" on your N3DS

I thought it was not possible. If I recall correctly it was one way. 3ds > n3ds, and not possible to go back. (Between n3ds's is still possible)
Hopefully I am incorrect though...

I sure hope so! I am going to try today and report back if no one else has a definite answer.

No! You cannot, it is probably to prevent people to transfer n3DS titles to transfer to old 3DS systems, because those games do not work with old 3DS systems. This has been tried and tested, you simply cannot transfer from n3DS to old 3DS unfortunately!

Nope you can't go back. I would bring it back to the store but force them to let you do a system transfer with the replacement. You could also call nintendo to do a manual transfer from their end and you can backup your saves on pc I think,

The way you replied so confidently was so funny, almost fell off my chair! LOL. And no you can't because the New 3DS has additional features the old 3DS doesn't have. It would be the same comparison as saying "Can I put my Aston Martin's V12 engine into my Yaris?" where the answer would be no, because the engine wouldn't fit in the bay...

Systems: Wii U, Wii, New 3DS Ambassador Edition, 2DS
Amiibo Collection: Villager, Rosalina, Zelda, Sheik, Toon Link, Link, Marth, Ike, Robin, Lucina, Pit, Shulk, Fox, Yoshi, Toad, Squid Inkling, Meta Knight, Ganondorf (pre-ordered), Yarn Yoshi (pre-ordered)
