so i was really amazed when nintendo presented this handheld. and like a week before launch i was on fire and very hyped.

i tested one on launch day. it was cool but i was kinda disappointed because i thought things would come out of the screen just like in the 3D movies. but it hasnt. it still was cool enough for me to buy one. i thought "well maybe it only has the depth but not the popouts".

but it seems like i am wrong. 3DS has these popouts right?
am i the only one who cant see them? i can see the depth pretty good. i tested ridge racer, star wars, pilot wings, nintendogs and all the preinstalled things the 3DS has. i dont get headaches or eyestrain.
but i just cant see things pop out of the screen. why not? any ideas?

Yes,the 3DS has "pop out" 3D effect. I have seen it. Use Ibuki's first Ultra Combo in SSFIV3D. Works great.

dont have that game. but i read there are pop outs in many other games too. and i dont see them

i dont have any other problems with the 3d effect. i just cant see popouts. though i have seen them in cinemas pretty well. like it scared the out of me when i was young at bees cam flying at me.
but nothing on the 3ds. just depth

I see the pops out just as well as 3D movies like Avatar.
I recently viewed a 3D TV at target to compare the 3DS and TV-Glasses 3D.

First I wanted to thank Nintendo for not making us wear glasses.
Now that that's out of the way, I wanna say it's about the same, and some effects even look better. Though it all depends what the developers/movie makers can do to make something "pop-out" and make you go "whoa!"

I can't see the pop-outs either. Of course the 3D hurts my eyes after a few minutes too.

Kinda seems gimmicky in general, though. When I did use it it didn't really add anything to the gameplay. I just play in 2D all the time, see clearer and save battery life. :3

I can see the pop-outs just fine, and I don't even have any games yet. Some people I know are disappointed that most of the 3D effect goes into the screen, and that there aren't that many pop-outs. I'm not complaining, though, because if the "coming out at you" effect was overused, big objects would get cut off by the screen's edges and ruin the visuals.

@Malkeor: I'd say it's way better than most 3D movies. Every time I've gone to see one, the everything looks like a cardboard cutout. The 3DS makes everything a lot more detailed and gives objects depth instead of just the scenes.

Yeah I suppose you're right. I don't think there isn't enough depth. Though I mean when done right, some special effects do look pretty cool, but they don't last long. xD

There definitely are pop outs, as well the depth.

Nintendogs + Cats when your pet climbs up on the screen to lick your face... seriously looks like they're poking out.

I noticed a lot of "pop-outs" in Face Raiders.

I don't have any games yet but PilotWings is coming in the mail in the next few days, so we'll find out.
The AR Cards to me didn't really pop out, nor any of the graphical effects found anywhere in the 3DS menu or applications. I'm kinda bummed, to be honest.

But we'll wait when more games, like OoT comes out. Then we should be seeing more games that pop out (sorry terrible pun)

Yes, you really notice it when you use the Samus Aran Ar card, put her in firing mode, then point her directly at you.

Yes, the 3DS can generate a 'pop-out' 3D effect. I can give you a few examples.

If you highlight the Activity Log channel you can clearly see the two coloured pencils come out fo the screen as they orbit around the Activity Log logo.

In Nintendogs + Cats when you call for your dog it will come up to you and stick it's head slightly out of the screen.

Using the 3D camera, in good light you can create a pop-out effect by taking a picture of almost anything at close range. For example, I took a picture of my Dad 'punching through the screen' by taking a picture of his clenched fist about a foot away from the twin cameras. It is a breathtaking effect, one I doubt I'll get bored of for a long, long time.

I'm sure we'll see developers master the pop-in/pop-out effects over the years, however with such a small screen we're limited to the amount of pop-out it can produce - it will never be on the same scale as Avatar, however it will be proportionately awesome.

I really do not understand all of this talk about the Nintendo 3DS and the 3D effect being a gimmick, the 3D effect clearly enhances gameplay if only from a visual standpoint, but this is an enhancement that most will come to expect from handhelds and those without it, including the NGP, will feel outdated no matter how many polygons they can produce.

I think the pop-out effect looks more impressive than the depth effect, because it's almost as if we are seeing things between the screen and our eyes, which looks nothing short of spectacular in my opinion.
I've found that there's a few pop-outs in the menus of the 3DS:

The pencil that spins around the Activity Log seems to pop-out of the screen.
Almost all of the menu items in Face Raiders pop-out.
There are a fair few notifications that pop-out when you click on them to read more info.
When you draw ontop of your photos in Graffiti mode of the 3DS camera, the lines will appear to be infront of the photo.

There's some more pop-outs in games and menu screens alike, though overall, the effect doesn't seem to be put to good use to be honest. I'm sure there'll be a moment in some game where something hits us in the face and we will be deeply impressed, but until then, we should just enjoy playing our 3DSes' in all of their 3-Dimension glory. xD

I'm not entirely sure if I can even see the 3D right.

I can't see the pop-outs either. It just looks like I'm looking at things through a window, which is cool enough for me.

I agree. That's a really good one. I just had to snap a picture of it.

There're also a couple of pop-out effects in that 3D movie with the dogs that they sent out in the first update.

Ash: Professor Oak, how's your Bulbasaur?
Prof. Oak: Oh, it only hurts when I sit.
...
Prof. Oak: It's only Chansey if Krabby won't let go. Bye, now.
Ash: I don't think I'm going to call him anymore.

I hate when they pull that in 3D movies. They just fling things towards you. I much prefer the feeling of depth and multiple layers.

kind of off topic.... but wouldn't it be nice if they included a 3D version of the movie itself with the obligatory bad movie games that will be released in the 3DS?
That would make some of these games worth the buy.

I'm not sure why you expected things to look like they do in 3D movies, when it's an entirely different 3D technology?

The technology is different, but it works on the same principle. It's only different ways of sending separate images to each eye.

The reason why you don't see things pop out a lot in 3DS games is that when things that pop out hit the edge of the screen, it messes up your perception and really ruins the 3D effect. Only objects that stay entirely within the boundaries of the screen can be displayed as popping out properly. Since most games take place in worlds that are much bigger than what will fit in the screen at any one time, the opportunities to effectively display things as popping out are pretty rare.

Stop complaining and GO PLAY GAMES.
