Currently Phone and tablet gaming has taken a huge chunk out of portable gaming hardware, and though the 3DS still does well, it's selling bellow it's predecessor, the DS. Still, I don't think gaming optimized mobile devices will dissapear, or become irrelevant forever, I feel they just need to adapt. I think it's a matter of integration and adaptation. The 3DS has literarly no official integration with mobile devices, and can't support many game engines mobile devices use due to it's aging hardware. So with the 3DS successor (which will likely be the NX). Can Nintendo increase the appeal of having dedicated mobile gaming devices by integrating them with smartphone and tablets via companion apps? A big reason the 3DS isn't selling as high as it could is because as I said, it doesn't offer much reason for the general gamer to own one along with their phone, as they'd rather use their phone to play games. So integrating phone and tablet use can make it more appealing. Like, say you left you're NX portable at home, well you can stream a few games to your tablet and play with a compatible controller. There's also companion apps some games can have.

Nintendo talked about some membership service in their partnership with DeNA that incorporates Phones and Tablets, so I'm sure we're going to see a lot of mobile integration with the NX soon. Add Unity, Unreal Engine, and Nintendo Web Framework, and I can see the NX portable being a success. So what do you think?

Hendesu

Not going to happen. Nintendo never uses Unreal Engine.

Some random dude on Nintendo Life.
Toriel left for a while, so Freaky Fred took over her place!
Not changing this part of the signature until Nintendo announces Super Mario Sunshine 2.
