I'm trying to play Pokemon Black online with my 3DS, but it says it doesn't support the security settings. I'm using a WPA2 security setting.

Nope, that setting doesn't work. If the 3DS has advanced setup like my DSi does then try that. If not, you'll have to change the security settings for your Wi-Fi.

So when playing normal DS games on a 3DS, does the game go by it's own internet settings, or the settings of the 3DS?

ds games dont seem to support wpa2. everytime i try to play online with my ds games, i need to change my router security settings.

since i hardly play for a long time offline, i usually turn it off, do my things then turn it on again.
this way, i played every ds titles i have online.
picross ds,picross 3d, gta chinatown wars, the world ends with you, dragonquest 9 and many more i dont recall right now hahaha

While I don't have a 3DS, I've set up my DSi to play Pokemon Black online. The relevant internet settings (including the ability to set WPA2 encryption) are found under the 'Advanced Setup' button in the DSi Internet Settings screen - perhaps there's something analogous in the 3DS?

I used to have a blog link here. I'll put it back up when the blog has something to read.

Unfortunately they use their own settings, but you can set them using the 3DS by going under "Internet settings" and selecting the option for Nintendo DS settings (I think some games require you to set it up through the 3DS).

true. but i still had problems with certain games, like dragonquest 9.
i really had to remove security completely.

Did you try updating it?
Try going online again, it will tell you to update, so it can go online on the 3DS.
My Pokemon Black works fine on the 3DS and I'm able to go online.

It is a DS game and only supports the WEP security setting on the router. 3DS can support WPA2 but not for DS games. You would have to setup your router to work with the WEP security. You would then be able to play all games on your 3DS online. I have the same issue. Just have not got around to it yet.

this. DS games still requiring a WEP connection is a known issue that became a problem when the DSi hit, as the DSi can handle more advanced security settings than the DS could. if you have a Nintendo Wi-Fi Connector, you don't have to worry about it though :3

Thanks but I fixed the problem. I called my internet provider and had them set up a second connection on my router. So now I have one connection with WPA2 (for my laptop), and another with WEP (for my 3DS).

This is not entirely correct. Some DSi-Enhanced games (including Pokemon Black & White, Mario vs. Donkey Kong: Mini-Land Mayhem among others) support WPA2 encryption, as long as they are played on a 3DS or DSi.

The vast majority of DS games, however, do not.

EDIT: To be entirely clear, it works like this:

  • The DS and DS Lite consoles support ONLY WEP or unencrypted wireless connections. Regardless of the game, you will need WEP or no encryption on your router to play online.
  • The 3DS and DSi consoles support WEP, WPA, WPA2 etc. SELECT DS games (which have been DSi enhanced) will be able to support the more advanced encryption, as long as the console has also been set up for your router with that encryption. However, playing normal DS games (which are not DSi-Enhanced) will still require a WEP or unencrypted wifi network to access online, as well as your console being configured for that connection.
  • I'm not 100% sure about 3DS games but I assume that all of them support the more advanced encryptions, in which case the connection just needs to be set up properly to access your router. As mentioned above, certain DS games will support that encryption too, but most won't.

I hope that sums it up for everyone.

Thank you for pointing this out, I was just about to. I think the problem here is that WPA encryption needs to be set up on the DSi in connection slots 4, 5, and 6, while the 3DS lacks these additional slots in the DS wifi settings. Can DSi enhanced games use the 3DS connection slots in lieu of the DSi slots?

I don't have a 3DS so I'm not sure on that, but I assume that if the standard connections allow WPA(2) encryption to be selected then DSi games will utilise that.

I don't know why Nintendo opted to put the WPA-supporting connections in the 'advanced' tab in the DSi, as they were well and truly standard by the time the DSi came out. I guess they didn't want to confuse people who still had their routers using WEP connections and were setting up their new DSi?

@Wheels: the vast majority of DS games are not DSi-enhanced, thus the problem with being forced to keep a WEP connection available if you want to play them online. Again, a Nintendo Wi-Fi Connector solves it :3

that said, if what you're saying is true, the OP already said they were using a WPA2 connection...? they should've been able to get online with no problem, then. ah, i see you guys posted before i did — idk the answer to that one.

Oh I certainly agree that it's a hassle that the older games don't support newer encryptions, and you're right that a Nintendo wi-fi connector is a convenient way around it (assuming you can get your hands on one).

I took what was said to mean that there were NO DS games which support WPA2, which is incorrect - certain ones do, including the game in question. (I'm a scientist, I like to get facts straight!).

While I can't personally confirm that Pokemon Black works with WPA2 on a 3DS, I can confirm that the NA version works on a DSi (I use it often) and I think others here have supported the former. My guess, tendoboy, is that your connection settings were not correct on your 3DS - and the fact that it works with your new WEP connection makes me think that you had WEP selected instead of WPA2 on your 3DS internet connection settings.

While you've found a way around it, it's not ideal - except that you'll now be able to play any DS games online, which might suit you. However, if you were not planning on using DS games requiring WEP connections, you've now got a wifi network you don't need as well as it having quite low security (which may or may not be a problem depending on your circumstances - WEP is notoriously easy to crack. WPA2 still isn't bulletproof, but it's much better than the former).
