Topic: Buying a Download vs Buying a Cartrige

I prefer having the physical copy, the cartridges in other words. The main reason are the boxes. Box art is a relatively new thing, but it's a play on an old form. My first games were not video games, they were tabletop RPG games, and boardgames. The publishers had to attract new players all the time without the aid of the internet, and part of how the did that was to hire top notch artists to design, and paint, the covers of the books, boxes, and playing pieces. Today I own several out of print books with art that's worth more than the book's other contents.

With video games it's more of just keeping an old tradition, that one small thing from the past that you just enjoy. So like collecting stamps, I collect game boxes for all the games I buy. I actually refuse to buy any game without it's original box if I buy a physical copy, the main reason I stopped spending much money at Gamestop actually. Eventually the notion of even box art will fade, as time marches on things will always change, but until then I will enjoy my collecting of arts.

If i like the boxart i just can't buy the download. At least not until it's heavily discounted.

You don't necessarily have to do that when you buy a cart either. God bless internet shops.

If it's a game that has a lot of replayability and I want to access at any time (Pokemon, Animal Crossing, Fire Emblem), I buy digital.
If it's a game that I might consider selling eventually, either because I dislike it or I get tired of it, I buy physical.

i like this.
since i plan on playing bravely default a lot then i may as well always have it with me on the SD card.
on the other hand, there is a collectors edition cartridge that i really want to get with 24 AR cards etc.

I don't see the point in going digital instead of cartridge on the crummy old poop 3DS...

Discs these days are showing signs of not being able to cope with the massive amounts of data they need to push to get smooth framerates, fast load times, less pop in and reduced glitchy/crashing... That's why I prefer to go DIGITAL 4 LYFE BABY! in this new gen console age

While I know your always the preacher of always digital, considering the 3DS does not use discs and what are essentially glorified SD cards there is no performance loss or wear and tear issues.

In fact the SD is more likely to run into issues due to all the reading and writing of multiple games rather then just one. Of course we will have 4DS' by then.

I wonder if people know that the SD cards have a limit to the read/write instructions they can perform in their lifetime? SD technology is actually an old technology that was considered non-viable in the past due to this limit. The return was because we managed to increase that limit to a more feasible amount. Though most cards will not outlive this limit, I have reached it, with bad sectors popping up everywhere. Cartridges have a higher limit, because of fewer write instructions they receive, so they will last longer, a lot longer actually.

I want Nintendo to go back to ROM carts. They were the original digital gaming format. Fast, reliable and scratch resistant.

I only posted this to get my avatar as the forum's thumbnail.

That wasn't a Nintendo product, that was actually a pirating product.

Only ever purchased Animal Crossing: New Leaf and Super Luigi U as digital downloads and regret both. Was bored of AC after a couple months and was unable to resell it. I would like to unload NSMBU as well, since I don't play that anymore either, but if I sell that I will also lose access to the downloaded version of Super Luigi U I have on my system. So although I play neither anymore, I refuse to sell NSMBU out of principle because I don't want to lose two games!

I have no problem spending $5-10 on a digital download, but would never pay $60 for a retail title.

90% of the time physical is significantly cheaper on the 3DS than digital for retail games, and I like to sell the games I never plan on playing again. That's good enough reason to stick to physical for me when available. The only full priced retail game I have ever bought is Luigi's Mansion 2, and I regret it.

Physical all the way for me. I love having something physical and not to mention I can resell my games. The most important factor though, is my wife and I both have our own 3DS. So with physical copies we can play on the same cart instead of buying 2 of them (Yeah I'm talking to you pokemon).

Cartridge everytime. I will probably stop buying consoles when the physical cartridges are no longer available.

3DS is always Digital for new games, for a portable gaming console the less I have to carry the better so this point weighs a lot heavier then others.

This might be less of an issue if I was a Women and carried a Purse around(or just carry a purse but I dont see that happening) , but I only have pockets on me which greatly limits what I carry with me.

"Don't have to wait for long download", You may not but you also now have to physically pick it up or pay shipping.

@6ch6ris6 No difference in Speed

Well I bring backpack with me all the time and I have no problem except for shopping in some stores since they don't trust anybody with bags. You could use a man purse as well. I'm just saying.

Umm… Care to have some gravy?

There are plenty of games I got a cartridge of some games that I wish I got digital

People keep saying the Xbox One doesn't have Backwards Compatibility.
I don't think they know what Backwards Compatibility means...

You know the funny thing is I don't know why I buy the cartridges. Sometimes it does seem easier to just download it from the e-shop. I would say I like the box but I just recently got the club nintendo game case so my games are no longer in their cases. I no longer buy games at gamestop so I don't really trade them in either.

Having to get a super huge SD card isn't a real problem for me so I guess...I don't know. Right now I have two games downloaded. One was eshop only and the other was more expensive at retail than online. I've been considering switching to all digital but I do most of my game shopping ala Amazon and they have some really great game deals. Especially since I hardly buy games when they come out or on preorder.

Depends on the game... Games that have a lot of replay ability like Monster Hunter, Animal Crossing, Fire Emblem etc. then I'll definitely go digital.

But games that I have a feeling I might get bored with after a while then I'll buy cartridge.

To be honest, I'm turning into a huge download fan, for one I can carry just my 3DS with no extra bulk which is quite nice. I can just pull it out and get playing, no faffing around with cards.

Regardless of your preference, I think it would be great if Nintendo allowed people who bought the physical copy to include a digital code inside. I prefer physical copies whenever possible, to me digital downloads are just glorified rentals, but I do see the benefit of just having a game like Animal Crossing right there all ready to go on the 3DS. I mean if I already payed for the cartridge, why can I not also have the digital download on my 3DS?
