"Square Enix will launch a free-to-play version of Bravely Default: The Flying Fairy on the Japanese 3DS E-shop on July 28th.
Bravely Default: For the Sequel – Full Free Play Edition includes the first four chapters of the full game. If players want to continue afterwards, an update kit containing the final five chapters, Japanese voice-overs, and one part of the AR movie feature will be available for 2,000 yen."

What are your honest opinions about this?
Chapters 1-4 takes around 30-40 hours to complete, so it's like some sort of super-demo.

Interesting concept.. but I wonder how microtransactions will work in this "super demo".

Square Enix could've easily just released a short and gripping tease of a demo.

I own a Wii U and 3DS. I also own a PS4!

Sadly, this is SE we are talking about.

They probably plan to use the 3DS as a second Microtransaction machine starting with this.

Bravely Default all ready had micro-translations.
And you can upgrade to the full version for 2,000 yen, that's cheaper than the full retail game.
I really hope they don't add more micro-translations in, though.

As long as it doesn't actively hurt the experience, I don't see the problem.

Though SE is usually not good at this, so it's good to be cautious, but I prefer this idea to basically any others. It's like a demo, except it gets more people interested instead of less.

Capcom, of all companies, has apparently been good with this idea. Like you can get AA or Ghost Trick on iOS with a couple of free chapters and then buy individual chapters or buy the rest for a sane price. It's a clever idea, on its own at least.

Definitely works when handled right. The free chapter of Ghost Trick on IOS is what sold me on the game.

They will reduce the xp and gold you get or something. Or increase the difficulty of the enemies or remove save points or something.

There is no way a comparable experience to the retail game will cost less.

All I remember when I heard about this is that the voice acting isn't available in this "demo" and you'll have to upgrade to the full version if you want to hear it.

I still don't understand why this free-to-play/demo plays until chapter 4, that's already a huge part of the game as the rest is kinda repetitive and the final boss is kinda meh so I can see some people not upgrading and everyone else just going for the "Bad" ending if they already got the full version.

I'm not lazy! ...I'm just very forgetful. :|

Hah. It's funny because that's basically almost everything the game has to offer. After chapter 4 it's incredibly repetitive, anyone who pays to play past that will likely feel they wasted their money.

Jep! You have the best part of the game for nothing! The not so great part comes after that I believe. I do wonder, there are probably some other money leeching tricks added to this version of the game.

This is really interesting considered how long the chapters can be.

Man, I would have loved this. The four chapters which actually matter, and no voice acting to take up my SD card space? Also, I completely forgot this game even had microtransactions. They were so inconsequential to the gameplay

always thought I'd change to Gyarados after I turned 20 but hey, this is more fitting I guess. (also somebody registered under the original Magikarp name and I can't get back to it anymore orz)

If they spend the profits on creating a world that you can actually explore in the 2nd game, I'm all in favour.

A 'city' is a place with more than 2 explorable houses Square Enix!

Absolutely. I really really enjoyed the first half of this game. But it just goes nowhere. It completely loses its momentum. It really ruined the game for me cos it was so close to greatness.

They're giving away the good part of the game, I can't understand this at all but it's definitely a clever idea to boost the fan-base of the game.

Didn't it already sell a million copies? Lol, that's about equivalent to the most popular Tales game. And that series has been going for like 20 years.

Yeah it's probably just to hype up the sequel more than anything. I figure at least this way they can have a direct narrative follow-on without everyone complaining about spoilers for the first game

They gove away the best part of the game for free. And 500 yen to get the last 4 chapters
