The larger the card, the larger the character that comes out of it. The 3DS cameras will think it's near, even if it's far. It's like cheating. You could even print one yourself and it would still work.
I don't think larger cards would be worth nintendo coins/stars/status/whatever (unless they where mats or something). Nintendo even released a free printable version of the cards you could easily print yourself in oversized proportions.

So what would happen if I printed out a black-and-white copy of a card? Would the 3DS recognize it? If so, would the figure produced be in color?
The only printers I have access to are black-and-white...well, all but one, but it's hard getting a hold of that one.
Theoretically, black and will either work, or it won't. I'm in the same boat as you tristen. Of course, if someone had something like a tablet, they wouldn't even need to print the card out.
I don't think a black and white card would work, the system more than likely uses the color on the cards to help itsef.
And i don't think the cameras can recognize the shapes on the cards at all. Even so, the product would always be a colored model, because thats how they are programed there.
You could always put your screen facing up or something
Good thing I can print up to A3+ size for free at school, and also buy more resistant paper for about 1$ each. If my teacher approves (he usually does) I can even print several meters on the UV-printer. I might create a collection of A4 and A3, and maybe a giant Mario or something while I still have the opportunity, even if I won't get a 3DS in a while (must...have...red one)
