Hey guys, wanted to start a Tactical RPG thread to talk about this genre with all of you!

What are the best Tactical RPGs you played on the 3DS (or any other system if something comes to your minds!) and what made them so great?

My pick is for sure Fire Emblem, from the gameplay and combat mechanics to the Jobs and mastery of them, I loved this one!

Add me if you want and PM me to be added back!

Fire Emblem, Devil Survivor Overclocked, and Ghost Recon Shadow Wars! I could play any of those any time of the day. All of them have good stories and great game play!

I'm pretty sure the only "Tactical RPG" on the 3DS are Shadow Wars and Fire Emblem. The rest are "Strategy RPGs", which have less of an emphasis on tactics...

Fire Emblem: Awakening is so much better that it's unfair to the competition.

Devil Survivor: Overclocked is a distant second place.

Best thread ever

Fire Emblem. I have played a small amount of Transformers Rise of the Dark Spark and it wasn't too bad. I would recommend it if you like Transformers.

People keep saying the Xbox One doesn't have Backwards Compatibility.
I don't think they know what Backwards Compatibility means...

Anybody who doesn't say Fire Emblem: Awakening is just trying to be different.

So Anakin kneels before Monster Mash and pledges his loyalty to the graveyard smash.

All i can say is that i enjoy Ghost Recon: Shadow Wars a freaking lot. I've beaten the game and immediatly started playing it on a higher difficulty. The gameplay's just so damn addicting.
And so far i've always got bored by Advance Wars and Fire Emblem games early on.

I was sure Fire Emblem would be a pick for most of you but yeah, unfair comparison for now, the system surprisingly has few TRPGs or SRPGs.
What do you guys think, is it because the genre isn't popular anymore (even if FE sales seem to say otherwise)?

If some of you remember in the days of the SNES till last Gen there where a lot of them and many had a lot of praise, nowadays there are very few, not only on the 3DS but on other platforms as well!

What do you all think?

I personally think the genre appeared because of hardware limitations. Now that there is few limitations we are seeing less because people unfortunately want flasher games. Sure you can make the genre look great Now a days but few have taken the time to. Personally it's one of my favorite and I would love to see more. I'm just glad we have what we do up till now. To this day Vandal Hearts remains as one of the best and my personal favorite from the genre.

SRPGs were never that popular in the west. :/

Anyways, my favorite 3DS SRPG is Devil Survivor Overclocked (which I can totally say now that I've upgraded to the 3D version).

@Spooney_Tech - BTW, do you have a 360? Konami released a newish Vandal Hearts back in 2008 I think. You ever play it? I hear it was pretty good, funny graphics aside.

You mean you just NOW got it? O.O

Hope you didn't pay touch for it. Yeah, I've been itching to get back into it. Voices story everything about it to me was done well!

No 360 here but I would love to play that. The 2nd one wasn't as good as the first to me.

Declining genre that was never that popular to begin with. However, there are some eShop games there as well, including Shining Force. But, yeah, Fire Emblem takes the cake. Project X Zone is another game I enjoyed immensely, but it does get repetitive, so if you aren't a huge fan-service junkie (and don't like boobs), don't get it.

It's kinda sad, as I love these games. However, we do have FE X SMT to look forward to, on the WiiU. And, since FE:A was so successful, we can easily expect another 3DS game before we get a new handheld system. Also, Codename S.T.E.A.M, next year.

The genre is choked because few Japanese-only games are being released in English. There's the usual bunch of Banpresto crossover games (Super Robot Taisen UX being the most notable, but there's also the Compati Heroes game metaseries (Gundam x Kamen Rider x Ultraman with a handful of Banpresto Originals thrown in) which has been ever-so-slowly migrating to the Vita), for example, of which only Project X Zone made it westwards.

I'm 96% certain that if the 3DS wasn't regionlocked or the DS had more of these released in English, we wouldn't see such an outflow of games of this type to the Vita due to the drop of sales to importer players.

Definitely Fire Emblem and Ghost Recon Shadow Wars.

Yeah, I was halfway through the DS version so I thought "I have no need for the 3DS version", but it was on the eShop for $15 so I bit the bullet. I'll play it so I can go a different route, depending on what I get when I finish the DS version.

Awakening was pretty dull, but there is not a lot of competition, so I'll go with that
