Thanks for the help everyone; I'm going with Pokémon Y. Before I start playing (late next week), I want to have a little knowledge; what are some good guides (whether online or in an actual book) that cover the "basics of the basics" without many spoilers?

It's really just progression as you go. There aren't really anything you need walkthrough wise, it's pretty straight forward unlike past gens which needed back tracking... If you mean to learn the basics of pokemon in general, type matchups, etc you can figure half that out on your own in 5 minutes. Type matchup you can just look up.

What about post-game and meta game? I'm really interested in battling online and with my friends, maybe competitively someday.

Any of them, you do the same thing in every game.

That's a pretty huge over-generalization of a Pokemon game. What you do in Pokemon Platinum is NOT the same in X/Y. What you do in Black/White is NOT the same you do in X/Y. You just meant "battling and catching Pokemon", huh? Yeah, don't generalize like that.

Is there more to the Pokemon formula? Gotta catch 'em all? IDK what else is there? In almost every game in the main series = Story about the legendary pokemon on the cover (except red and blue because we had just been introduced to pokemon), fight gym leaders, fight an evil group, fight your rival throughout the whole game, elite four, champion and bonus stuff post game. In general yeah you can start with any pokemon game (the stories are self contained anyways). I mean X and Y has less grinding so I guess it's better if you can't handle the grind.

I'd recommend Pokemon Heartgold/Soulsilver for DS. Less Pokemon make it easier. It doesn't do anything too complex, and it makes it easier to transition to other pokemon games by starting with an earlier title.
That might be Pokemon X/Y's biggest problem. It's hard to transition to older titles, if you start with this one.
For starters, some might find the DS's visuals unappealing from starting at X/Y, another thing is that X/Y is too easy that while a newcomer can easily win at it, HeartGold/Soulsilver's difficulty goes at a great pace throughout the adventure. And with Heartgold/Soulsilver having 2x more gyms than X/Y it makes it alot easier to have that payoff in training your Pokemon.
Biggest flaw with HG/SS is that with Nintendo Wifi Connection discontinued it makes it almost impossible to catch every Pokemon.

Just jump in with the new. There's no big arcing storylines or anything like that. There is a self-contained story in each one, but the new games are more or less just updates of the old. New mechanics, new Pokemon, new features, etc. The game is really about collecting, training, trading, and battling Pokemon anyway.

X & Y are your best place to start now.

I may be wrong, but I think HG/SS had the highest number of obtainable pokémon without trading.. that of course could be different with X & Y and its Friend Safaris, but that's not even until post game. If I were bent on avoiding the newest games available I'd probably go with Black or White, they feel like reboots of the original generation and they have the bonus of only including (at the time) new pokémon until after the game is beaten.

Also, you can still get older pokes on X & Y thanks to GTS and Pokébank.

If you ever intend on playing the original Gen 1-3 games, play them before playing anything past that. The innovations in the franchise make going back to them feel much worse than they previously were. Otherwise, I recommend whatever the newest one is.

always thought I'd change to Gyarados after I turned 20 but hey, this is more fitting I guess. (also somebody registered under the original Magikarp name and I can't get back to it anymore orz)

I agree with Bolt_Strike. Black and White are good places to start. They are the last of the 2D Pokémon, and the leveling up is made easier since the experience you earn in battle is distributed in a way that benefits the weakest Pokémon in your party, reducing a lot of grinding. Hunting Audinos was also a great way to get a lot of experience while reducing the amount of battles. I am still a bit upset they removed that from X/Y.

Not to mention, Black and White are also the last Pokémon games that give you a regional Pokédex that you can actually complete. In any case, X and Y are still approachable games, very easy on the eyes, so you can't go wrong with them.

I will comment in this thread, never being able to find it again.

I have a question about Pokémon Bank/Transporter. If I were to start using the service, will I be able to transfer my Pokémon from Y to Alpha Sapphire or Omega Ruby when they are released?

Does that also mean that I needn't start from scratch in future games?

There's been no official word on Bank's compatibility with ORAS, but it can be assumed that anything you can do in XY, you can do in ORAS. So yes, you can simply transfer Pokemon over to ORAS from XY instantaneously with Bank.

Pokemon games always include the ability to transfer pokemon to the next game and this won't change with the next series. In fact, you can probably trade them over without Pokebank by using two 3DS, but nothing has been confirmed yet. In future Pokemon games you will start at the beginning of the story, but if you have transferred over strong Pokemon to beat it faster if you'd like. Most players just use new pokemon they catch to go through the story and transfer their other pokemon after. Many keep a log of which Pokemon they used in a region.

Serebii.net has great guides for mechanics and such as well. Good luck!

That's a given, Pokemon games of the same generation can always directly trade and battle with each other.

So I will be able to trade/battle with OR/AS players by using my copy of Y?

Nintendo hasn't given confirmation, but I would assume you could trade and/or battle with Pokémon X and Y using OR/AS

Let me put it this way. It'd be shocking if you couldn't.

IIRC items are removed automatically when put into the bank? so that means we should be able to move our pokes back and forth between XY and OR/AS.. I'm assuming an issue could arise if there are any new held items in OR/AS which I'm guessing there will be unless the currently unobtainable mega stones and assuming primal reversion works in a similar fashion, those stones or whatever would cause if one were to battle between XY and OR/AS. So unless those things are already coded in or could be patched in it may be pokébank only. I hope not but I'll be getting one of the remakes (haven't decided yet!) regardless and as long as I can at least move pokémon back and forth I'll be happy so I can keep battling with my friends who don't get it right away.

everything's good and it'll be that way forever!
