Topic: Best and Worst use of 3D on the System

Now, I don't mean how often it is used. I mean how effective it is when it is used.

Here are my nominations for best and worst use of 3D on the system.

BEST
1) Super Mario 3D Land (It is unbelievable how useful the 3D is for gameplay in this title. And I don't even mean the gimmicky stages that show off what the 3D can do. I mean that jumps are more accurate and gameplay overall is quite enhanced. It just gives such an impression of depth)

2) Pushmo (Although not as visually stunning as Mario, the 3D effect is just as useful in this for judging the relative depth of different blocks)

3) Paper Mario: Sticker Star (The contrast of 3D with the paper-thin characters really makes for a striking aesthetic. Plus, as with 3D Land, enabling the 3D helps with the precision of jumps)

WORST
1) Dead or Alive: Dimensions (Visually, the game looks pretty decent in 3D, but it really kills the speed of gameplay. Thus, the 3D is a detriment to the gameplay.)

2) Virtue's Last Reward (While the game itself is one of my favorites on the 3DS, the 3D effect is pretty lame. It is OK during novel segments where it makes the character models stand out a little bit, but it is almost useless during the escape portions. Sometimes I literally cannot tell the difference between the 3D being enabled and the 3D being disabled)

3) Tales of the Abyss (Pretty lousy 3D effect overall. Doesn't add much to the game)

Best:

  • Ace Combat: Assault Horizon Legacy (especially in cockpit mode)
  • Paper Mario: Sticker Star (mentioned in the first post)
  • Zen/Marvel Pinball 3D (makes it look like you actually have a small table in your hands)
  • Dead or Alive Dimentions (it slows the FPS, but the game still looks absolutely stunning with it on)
  • Mutant Mudds (I actually felt the game was a tad generic, but there's no denying that it's use of 3D is amazing)

Worst:

  • Tales of the Abyss (it's a port, so it's understandable)
  • VVVVVV (again, it's a port, so it's understandable)
  • Family Tennis 3D (the game is fun, don't get me wrong, but for some reason, the game just looks "off" while playing in 3D)

Switch - Blade Strangers
PS4 - Kingdom Hearts III, Tetris Effect (VR)

1) Dead or Alive: Dimensions (Visually, the game looks pretty decent in 3D, but it really kills the speed of gameplay. Thus, the 3D is a detriment to the gameplay.)

I was more than happy to trade of the game's speed for... err.... volume in DoA Dimensions. That's actually my #1

#2 Samurai Warriors Chronicles. Being able to better judge where each enemy is, precisely, helped the game a lot.

Worst

#1 Love Plus. The 3D didn't really add anything to the game.
#2 Super Monkey Ball. The 3D made me motion sick when combined with gyro controls.

In fact, any game that uses gyro controls and the 3D effect lose.

Best: Super Mario 3D Land (Gives more "life" to the game and helps a lot with platforming)
Star Fox 64 3D (First game I played ONLY with the 3D on, never played in 2D)

Worst: Harvest Moon A New Beginning (For as awesome as the game is, the 3D is almost non-existent...
New Super Mario Bros. 2 (Not that visible and actually makes the game look worse)

Revenge is better with chili sauce... everything is better with chili sauce.

Between the improved visuals and the nice 3D effect, Star Fox 64 3D really blew me away visually. Same for Ocarina of Time.

Didn't know the 3D sucked in "A New Beginning," That's good to know...

I wouldn't have minded a slight drop, but the frame-rate is cut in half when you enable the 3D. It makes the character motions look a bit jerky to me. In this case, fluidity > 3D for me. I do, of course, enable the 3D when I'm looking at the in-game figurines. Unless...um... I'm shaking it.

Have you played Prof. Layton and the Miracle Mask? That is probably my #1 game for the 3D effect on a purely aesthetic level. It hardly aids gameplay at all, but it is really, really, really impressive 3D. It's even more impressive when you consider the fact that this was a launch title for the 3DS (in Japan, at least). I actually flinched the first time I saw the victory finger in 3D.

I had completely forgotten about Star Fox 64 3D. The 3D effect in that game was great. I wish there was online for it though.

That's my main complaint about the game. Single player only goes so far, and I only know one person I can play local multi-player with. The lack of online multiplayer was a real disappointment.

The only disappointment, though. The game looks fantastic.

Best: Fire Emblem Awakening
Super Mario 3D Land (try playing it without the 3D on on some stages... also the rain effect in the last level? godly)
Starfox 64 3D
Zero Escape: Virtue's Last Reward

Worst:
Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor Overclocked. Literally nonexistent save for the opening movie and the clunky fusion animation.
Code of Princess - causes the game to lag like hell, and barely adds anything considering they're shrinky-dink pixelated 2D characters anyway.

Wost of the worsest:
Myst 3DS

There's no 3D at all, the game uses stretched versions of the screens used on the DS game. All the info on the eshop and the back of the box is a big lie.

Bloop.

I actually thought the 3D in New Super Mario Bros. 2 was pretty good because it was very subtle and unintrusive and I didn't experience any ghosting.

Worst has been Metal Gear Solid 3. Firstly because the 3D effect always tends to make the picture slightly duller and as this game is often quite visually dark it made things harder to see. Secondly, the ghosting was intolerable and I wasn't prepared to waste that much time straining my eyes trying to find some elusive sweet spot. I'm not even sure if this game had a sweet spot. I mean I love the game, but the 3D was just a nuisance and I permanently turned it off after a while.

Also Mario Kart 7's 3D was pretty decent, though it seemed to have an annoying knack of ghosting/blurring right at the moment when a yellow object was approaching and I couldn't tell whether it was a coin or a banana skin!

Best is Fire Emblem Awakening's birds. They scare me sometimes, they make me think there's a bug on my screen.

Super Mario 3D Land and Resident Evil Revelations are the best by far for me.

The Good: Kid Icarus, Mario3DLand and Paper Mario
The Bad: Most 2D games like VVVVVV, NSMB2 and Freakyforms. Denpa men has poor 3D too.

the good:
LoZ ocarina of time
ridge racer 3D
metal gear solid 3
resident evil revelations
PES 2012 - it has a special 3D perspective which looks awesome when you play in become-a-legend for example

the bad:
mario kart 7 - not bad but a bit more depth would be nice
PES 2012 - the wide angle view is bad with 3D.

Metal Gear 3D was fantastic,

Good:
Super Mario 3D Land. I didn't like the game much, but I thought the 3D effect was really good.
Ocarina of Time 3D. Very immersive. Too bad there's a lot of ghosting in the darkest areas (there's nothing that can be done about it though).
Pullblox/Pushmo. It makes the game slightly more comfortable to play.

Bad:
Tales of the Abyss. Tiny, aliased characters and environments don't mesh well with 3D. And the cut scenes are 2D, which is frustrating (but understandable since it's a port).
Art of Balance TOUCH! The reflection in the water is wrong (it's flat)! :[
New Art Academy. A minor feature, but some of the included 3D pictures aren't easy on the eyes (the two images are too far apart, I have to squint to see them like I should).
3D Classics: Kirby's Adventure. At times, the 3D just doesn't make any sense. It's really random.
The "graffiti" feature in Nintendo Camera, which allows you to add 3D on flat pictures. Pretty much impossible to use, even though I like the idea.

The 3D also looked bad in the Rayman Origins demo, but since I don't have the final game, I don't know if it was corrected later.

Best: Super Mario 3D Land (Actually uses it for some puzzles)
(Supposed) Paper Mario: Sticker Star (Actually helps for a few platforming sections apparently)

Looks good: Pushmo
Mutant Mudds
Mighty Switch Force
Resident Evil: Revelations

Worst: New Super Mario Bros 2 (What in the hell? If all these third-party low budget 2D platformer games use it well, why can't Nintendo do the same? That blurring crap is a joke)
Sakura Samurai (Them pop-outs)
VVVVVV (lol)
Crush3D (Actually not that bad, but disappointing)
Bit. Trip SAGA (Not that it doesn't look good, rather, it makes an already laggy and off-sync game even more laggy and off-sync)

This is a signature.

This will be of what I've played:
Best:

  • Super Mario 3D Land
  • Kid Icarus: Uprising
  • The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D
  • Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon
  • Paper Mario: Sticker Star
  • Mighty Switch Force
  • Resident Evil: Revelations

Worst:

  • Dead or Alive: Dimensions
  • Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D
  • Sonic: Generations
  • FreakyForms
  • New Super Mario Bros. 2

(Not every game I played, but I'm not listing every single one.)

And really, don't bother turning on the 3D with NSMB 2 and Mercenaries. You'd just be wasting battery life.
