Was looking at getting a pokeball 2ds XL they look amazing...but then got me thinking 3ds family have been out for how long now? 8 years? Maybe more....so don't think it will be long before Nintendo announce a.new system

6 years actually, and Nintendo will be sticking with 3DS for another couple of years at least before going all in on Switch, I guarantee it.
Anyway, buying an outdated system isn't that rare. I got a GC in 2012.

There's quite a lot of good games.
My personal recommendations:
The entire Ace Attorney series. (mostly on the eShop, goes on sale from time to time)
Xenoblade Chronicles 3D
The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask 3D (if you haven't played OoT before then play that first)
Mario & Luigi: Dream Team Bros.
Fire Emblem Awakening

Yo !
Time doesn't matter.
Go get New 2DS XL right now, don't think about the year.
Btw...
I bought Wii U on year 2016.
I bought Wii (used) on year 2015.
I bought Gamecube games on year 2017.
I bought PS2 Slim (used) on year 2017.
As you can see my purchase date, you can enjoy your video games regardless of the time.
Here are some Recommended 3DS games :
1. Animal Crossing New Leaf
2. Disney Magical World 2
3. Miitopia
4. Fantasy Life
5. Paper Mario Sticker Star
6. Tomodachi Life
7. Mario Kart 7
8. Style Savvy Fashion Forward
9. LEGO CITY Undercover : The Chase Begins
10. Pokemon Ultra Sun / Moon

Well, happy playing 3DS games !

It's definitely not too late to get a 3DS/2DS. The system is still (currently) supported, and the game library (especially if you're into RPGs) is amazing.

Currently playing: Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story + Bowser Jr's Journey, Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana (Switch)

The 3ds, and Wii U are awesome systems. The only issue you may run into purchasing one now, is regret that you didn't get either at lAunch. I got a launch Wii and was underwhelmed after the 1st year so I largely ignored the system and decided to wait for the games to lower in price. Their prices never lowered and in fact, are now sold used for the same price as new in most cases. In 2015, I got a u and pretty much abandoned current gen. I started buying up all the u s library and Wii games I missed out on and became a full blown Nintendo fan. I also got 2 3ds xls over the past two years and amassed a huge backlog across all three systems which are really underrated. The 3ds and wii/u were the first Nintendo consoles I've owned since the snes and now I have a switch and backlog I may. NEver catch up on but to answer your question, yes, buy a 3ds even if your not into handheld gaming. Most of its library is pretty cheap and the rpgs are psone/ps2 quality plus the Nintendo published games are some of their best. Theres an argument that the 3ds may be the best Nintendo system of all time. The only issue you may come across, is the lack of time to finish all the great games available on the system. I also don't buy the idea that the switch is meant to replace the 3ds and actually expect a new more powerful version at some point.

Should also mention that most Nintendo systems are timeless and expecting ds and 3ds games to ever be playable in their original form on future consoles will almost surely never happen, given the big n's track record of failing to update their massive catalogue on the virtual console. Its a travesty that ds games were never available on the 3ds eshop but plentiful on the Wii U. Most of the wiis virtual console retro games were actually proven to be emulated versions yanked off the Internet. So if you want to experience the 3ds library as it was meant to be played get a 2/3ds before the games start getting scalped.

Sooo many good games, especially role-playing games like Etrian Odyssey IV! As for digital games, who knows when Nintendo might discontinue the eShop for 3DS/2DS? Hopefully not before the end of 2018. I actually hope they produce another dual-screen handheld, although that's looking increasingly unlikely.

@Davey1988 The 3DS line of systems has an incredible backlog of games. If you are looking for a budget machine with lots of great content - and don't mind the small screen and low resolution, any of the "new" 3DS or 2DS systems are a great choice.

Just don't get one of the older models, as you wont be able to access the SNES virtual console titles, and several of the most recent games like Xenoblade, Hyrule and Fire Emblem Warriors.

I can safely say that if you haven't got a 2DSXL yet then get one now!! I play my New 3DSXL regularly and there are a wealth of DS games to play in the back catalogue too. Plus at the time of posting this comment all the online play and connectivity for the 3DS games are still fully functional on the Nintendo Network and think they'll be for quite some time😊 I was playing my GBASP well into 2014 so really there's no time like the present🎮
P. S I'm only posting my two pence here now because @Davey1988 was asking in the Friend Codes thread😊
