5th gen.. not 8th.. but i have my money down that nintendo will be the first ones to introduce the 8th gen of consoles.. with insanely crappy hardware... that makes me sad:(

Well said! I will defintely not buy another Gamecube 1.5 with totally out of date hardware. The Wii is my least favourite console this generation. Even Virtual Console couldn't change that.

But I'm quite optimistic about the 3DS. The DS was the best handheld since the original Gameboy.

The DS is considered by Guiness World Records to be the first Seventh Generation gaming system. Wikipedia also says the same. The DS is part of the seventh generation of gaming.

All of you people who keep saying the 3DS shouldn't be considered to be part of gen 8.... You are wrong when you say that it is part of the fifth generation of handhelds. First of all, it would be part of the sixth generation (GBC was a revision of GB similar to how the DSi is a revision of the DS. The Game and Watch is considered the second generation of handhelds while the electronic game systems such as Autorace were first), and second, it is part of the 8th generation of gaming systems. The DS and PSP are considered 7th gen, regardless if the GB screwed everything up by maintaining itself through 3 generations of consoles. Just because a console lives through more generations than its own doesn't mean that it's still not part of the generation it was born in.

The Atari 2600 was part of the 2nd generation of gaming. However, it lasted until 1991, a year after the fourth generation of gaming came to be. It's still considered part of gen 2.

The GB was part of generation 3 of gaming. However, the GBA was part of generation 6. The DS was generation 7, and now the 3DS is generation 8.

Huh? Xbox 360 was the first console of the 7th Generation.

Actually, the Nintendo DS was the first 7th generation system, though,

Wow, Wikipedia AND the Guiness World Records? Two rock solid sources right there.

And what are your sources? Opinion? There aren't such things as handheld generations of gaming.

@Toonlink97: then why should we be intrigued? apparently, this has all happened before. :3

I never said we should be, I just said that the 3DS is part of the eighth generation of gaming, and is the first announced.

I know, I understand. It's interesting that Nintendo is, once again, starting the new generation. I'm not intrigued though.

I almost with they weren't. Once Sony and Microsoft figure the 3D without glasses, they will take what NINTENDO thought of, and make it better. Then Nintendo needs to think of something else...

No. The only way Sony or Microsoft would be able to do 3D without glasses were if they were to bundle in parallax barrier TV's with their next generation consoles. You'd have to stand right in front of the TV in order to view the 3D.

That's consoles anyway.

For handhelds, Sony's already announced no 3D for their next handheld. Microsoft shouldn't enter the portable market, and if they do, they most likely won't include glasses free 3D.

Nintendo always comes with something amazing and complex. Friend Codes, Motion Gaming, 3D gaming, Cameras, 2 screened gaming. Even their controling is amazing with the Gamecube and the DS. If only their graphics was amazing.

More like Nintendo is the first to utilize something someone else thought of, and then the other companies improve upon it.

Well, they are pretty complex.

Nintendo is great at a lot of things, but their online skills are not one of them. Though I don't know why you said they aren't good at graphics. All of their big first title games look fantastic.
