yeah the card has to be visible in the image in order for the 3d character to appear. short of some unbelievably time consuming photoshop nigh-magic, it's real. That or the image is larger, the user cropped it, and the card the pikmin was actually stemming from is outside of the cropped image.
But really...who cares? I'm much happier believing the iPhone spawned pikmin

not saying he actually did this, but it's possible to take a pic of the card on the iphone and have it displaying on there, to the 3DS it's seeing the AR card
I had something similar to this happen to me when I was using my brother's system. I was viewing the Samus card, but the system mistook it for Pikmin. I think poor lighting caused my experience.
Grayfox means that the Pikmin card could be blocked by Mario's head, and (using the slide pad) the topic creator moved the Pikmin so they were on the iphone in the photo. The 3DS would still register the Pikmin card because AR Mario isn't really blocking it for the camera, just for us.
@megamac89: The mario is only an AR image and the lens would clearly be able to see the card. So normaly it can be done.
I got an Iphone 4 myself and havn't had this so thats is where my sceptisism comes from. If real I do apologise.
Its an iPhone 3GS and it was real! I have no time to edit pictures damn it! EDIT: Also when i was taking the picture the Pikmin kept appearing and vanishing! And kirby made an appearance too lol & there is not enough room for another card behind Mario and remember that the image cannot move too far away from the card

Hey I had Kirby popping out of my Mario .....or was it the Metroid card.
Yeah my Kirby kind of flickered in and out and I was lucky to get those pictures. I know for a fact that this whole thing isn't fake. I've experienced it firsthand!
If you add me, I need to at least know you or I won't add you back.
Allright, I have to apologise. After several attempts I got the same thing. A kirby flickering in and out of screen over my iphone. Sorry guys. I believe you now Forgive me?

I tried to emulate ZeDs image. The characters can't move very far from the card, so it was impossible to hide the card behind mario completely without placing him right next to them.
