I had an interesting idea yesterday as to a use for the AR feature of the 3DS (it may not be a new idea, but it's new to me!).
It's a step forward for the virtual board game genre: the Augmented Reality Board Game!
The concept would be that you place the card (or similar object) in the center of your playing area (preferably a table), and each of the players take a seat around it. Thus, everyone would get a separate view of it like a real board game. However, unlike a real board game, it does not necessarily need to be flat or sit still. It could have plenty of animated features and special effects; and/or minigames to play intermittently. It has loads of potential in my mind: like shaking the system to throw dice. Not to mention that if you get angry, you could throw the card and the game disappears!
Opinions or ideas?

Interesting Idea I'll give ya that. You think we could do a hotseat type thing with it, too?

If you shook the system, how would you keep the cameras on the ar card?

I think he means shake the AR card, like move it up quickly or something like you're tossing the dice in the air.

Well, you know, it was just an idea!
Oh! Maybe the system's cameras could recognize the numbers shown on real dice?

That might be hard. A lot of dice are different, you know. Personally I don't see why my idea wouldn't suffice.

You could just, you know, have a virtual dice that doesn't need you to shake the system.
Outstanding Morph Marron didn't fit. Woof.

My idea involved the card, not the system. But I see what you're saying: dice rolling at the press of a button is probably for the best.

It would work better on a tablet device... like the Wii u.

I actually really like this idea. Just the concept of a digital board game, but still have it sitting on the table. Genius.

I think it would be much easier playing the actual board game than using the 3ds to try aim at the "AR card"

But there are so many ways it can be more than a simple Board game. We could have Mario Party-level stuff here, too.

Well, my thought was that if you got tired, you could set the system down, at no detriment to the others. Granted, you wouldn't be able to see what everyone else did on their turns; but I think you should have the ability to put it down.

Now that we've established it as a good idea, what kind of games would you like to see presented this way? I think LIFE would be a good fit, as well as Sorry! or Clue.
