I think there is a strong possibility that it will happen, however, I think it is a sensible move for Nintendo to have released it on Wii U first as it would not have had as much fanfare (sales-wise) if a 3DS version were released before it or at the same time (a la Super Smash Bros. For 3DS and Wii U).
With very few games having been announced for a 2016 release on Nintendo platforms, I'd be surprised if a 3DS edition of Mario Maker wasn't in the works.
"Gee, that's really persuasive. Do you have any actual points to make other than to essentially say 'me Tarzan, physical bad, digital good'?"
i mean thats how it was with NEX REMIX.. they suprisingly released it around christmas 2 years ago.. then a year later started to release it on 3ds... so THAT would be amazing..
@sinalefa: It's really obvious though; a Mario Maker for the 3DS should have handheld Mario palettes.
A Mario Maker for 3DS is very likely, IMO. As I've said before in a similar thread, we could make a "World" (our handpicked selections in a package) and share them through StreetPass and SpotPass. That'll be a very brilliant use of StreetPass.
God first.

Oh god spare me, but I totally can imagine it happening. Smash & Hyrule Warriors being crossovers makes anything possible. I don't think this is the kind of game that would really have to be dumbed down though, the 3DS already has parallel Mario games to the WiiU. If anything they can perhaps switch it and have NSMB2 (instead of U)
I'd love to see a 3DS port of the game. However, I wouldn't announce anything before christmas 2015 as SMM is most likely going to be THE holiday title for the WiiU, next to maybe Xenoblade X. I can't see many people buying a WiiU for Mario Tennis or Amiibo Festival. Announcing it before christmas would probably put off a lot of people who are interested in the game and would buy a WiiU with the game for christmas.
Personally, though, I don't see myself buying such a version - unless they go the Hyrule Warriors Legends route and add like a "if you buy the 3DS version, you get that and that exclusive feature that is the only way of unlocking said content on the WiiU version" thing. But still, I'd only get it for the exclusive content, just like with Legends.
I'd really prefer a version that promotes the games they didn't use for a 3DS version instead of just releasing the same games (I mean hell, give me all the games tho while we're discussing .. is it even vaporware? is there enough to call it even that much?). But if it has to be 4 they could use Super Mario USA, Super Mario Land, Super Mario Land 2 and NSMB2
