How about this:
When you enter a person's friend code, they will receive a Notification with a picture of your Mii.

EXAMPLE:
"You have a friend request from Friend Code 1111-1111-1111!" [Mii Picture]

Then you can either Accept or Decline the request.

But then you would only be posting apple vs oranges threads.

It's like, I just love a cowboy
You know
I'm just like, I just, I know, it's bad
But I'm just like
Can I just like, hang off the back of your horse
And can you go a little faster?!

Yeah, I think an Accept/Decline option would make things a lot easier than both people having to add each other.
But that would allow all the paedophiles in the world to add little children to their friends list and send them inappropriate images through Letter Box...
I think something along those lines is while Nintendo opted for what they did.

Personally, I would much prefer it you way though.
Would make adding friends a lot easier.

Oh, and I added you @LordTendoboy

I have an idea! "You have received a useless thread by tendoboy on these blessed forums. Please ignore for the sake of your sanity." [Chuck Norris gif.]

If it bothers you so much don't throw your 3ds friend code around everywhere, and oh yes lets let Nintendo steal more things from Sony.

Nintendo wants to make sure both parties "know" each other and both want to be friends. They dont want weirdos picking up random codes across the interwebz and spamming everyone's boxes and doing who knows what. It's for the kids, think of the children, etc..... At least that's what I've heard in the past whenever someone brings up their archaic friend list system. We went over the million better ways to do it with the Wii too.

Oh please. Look at the friend system on Steam, Xbox Live, and PSN. Do you hear anyone complaining about pedophiles on those services? No.

Well as I said I would much prefer the accept/decline method as I'm not at all concerned about unwanted people adding me.
I was just trying to come up with a reason why they may have decided to do it that way.
It's probably to keep the parents happy more than anything, so they don't have to worry about who's contacting their children as much.

Let's hope they put a better system in place for the Wii U, and if not, then oh well... As long as it plays games, I'm happy.

Nintendo has a family-friendly, protect the children image, and Microsoft, Sony and Valve don't. Nintendo would like to protect the brand that is has built up over the past 20 or so years.

It boggles the mind how often people need to state the obvious.

That's what parental controls are for. Microsoft has them, and publicizes them, too. You can restrict access to Xbox Live and control friend lists and friend requests, and you can block certain games that are above a certain rating.

Can't Nintendo use parental controls in their friend list and messaging system?

In some moment Nintendo will impruve their system, but obviously they have to include a strong parental control system with it.

Just look @ how they wave the "3D should be restricted for 6, & under" thing. They could try to educate, & publicize parental controls. Parental controls is/are not something to be different in, unless the different system is better.

well i just hope its easier, its not like i have a problem with the freind code on the wii or anything but with how hard it was at the time to get it set up

its certainly going to make, making freinds from certain online games on the wiiu harder etc etc this being the case id only have one freind on the wiiu ironically being the one who lives in the same city as me
