Topic: alright, the cameras flat out suck

not like anyone bought a 3DS just for the photos but it did seem like a really great feature to be able to use it as a 3D camera. we were all warned that the cameras were going to be cheap .03 megapixels but i still didn't expect it to look quite this blotchy. it's almost to the point of making the camera useless, since even throw away shots of friends under ideal lighting conditions are a pixelated mess.

it's still a great concept. i've been taking shots with it the past week or two whenever i see a landscape with lots of figures at different distances and some of them would be really cool if they were just clear enough to see everything. anyone think nintendo will fully realize the potential of the 3D camera on the next version system with some more megapixels? for $250 i don't see why not, almost every cell phone these days has an HD camera.

hopefully. My friends on facebook have been complaining about the quality. though if you mess with the settings a bit it helps a little.

Just like the DSi, they're intended for use with games and for casual photos. Better cameras would raise the price significantly and I thought everyone was saying $250 was already a little high.

It's not like the screens can show a higher resolution anyway. You aren't going to be using the 3DS for your photography class, that's for sure.

Tweeking settings help a bit, but you can get decent pictures in the right conditions. With a better camera you would be able to take decent pictures anywhere because if you dont have the right conditions the pics do look pixilated, but that would have probably knocked the price up more than it would have cost them but the cameras work fine for the games which is the main reason for them in the first place.

My only issue with the camera is the lack of wireless trading that even the dsi had. Odd you have 100 ways to share Miis but only one (SD Card solution) to share photos.

0.3MP is the resolution of SDTV, roughly the same as the 3DS screen, they're mainly for AR games and not photography. They could have used iPhone style cameras (basically the same physical size) but that would have hiked the price up something nasty and it's expensive enough as it is

i find it hard to believe that with how clear the screen is for everything else that it can't display photos with enough resolution to even make out someone's facial features. if you view photos from another camera on your 3DS the screen handles the better resolutions there just fine. not that i'm an expert or anything, it just seems impossible that the screen is at its limit with these cameras.

as far as what i or anyone else needs a high quality 3D camera for there's really no reason, but if nintendo was going to include it as a feature it would have been nice to make it a little more competent. it wouldn't take that much of a jump in camera quality to get photos that are passable. there's not much of a point in using the camera outside of games like you guy said, so a feature that could have been really cool is almost useless.

as far as raising the price goes nintendo openly stated that they had been prepared to sell it for a lower amount before e3 last year, then they raised it because they were confident people would pay more. that jump in cost probably could have paid for better cameras easily, so it's not like the 3DS is strictly priced near its actual value anyway. they've got some room for improvement before they'd have to raise the price.

and no, i don't have any friggin games yet.

yeah, the photos look like crap. totally unimpressive else than the nifty 3D view.
but the grain in there is horrible, it reminds me that camera toy from fisher price which i bought to my daugter. but a bit better.
yeah, thsoe cameras remind me of a toy, and it also reminds me i didnt buy the 3ds for a camera replacement.

so i use it only for fun, or to check pictures on my 3DS. i will probably never end up puting them on my computer....
unless some makes a 3d photo reader and simulate it on the computer screen. that could be nice to try.
im having lots of fun times with this camera, even if they dont look good enough to make a wallpaper or something. and since the 3ds follows me everywhere, my photo gallery is taking more room every week, making nice souvenirs. in three dee.

It's still worth having on you if you're in daylight. I actually got some great pictures at DisneyWorld last month. They look blurry even if it's a little dark, and the lack of a zoom function hurts, but every now and then I get a shot that is just perfect for 3D. Like the statue of Walt and Mickey with Cinderella Castle in the background. It's like I'm right there...

I agree with this if the photos are taken in-doors but outside I've gotten some truly stunning looking photos that look great and very sharp, especially with 3D activated. When inside, try setting the camera on the low-light setting. It really helps otherwise dark, pixilated photos. I for one really like the camera as a camera and have been using it as my camera since I first got DSi. If you learn to work with it then you can get some respectable photos.

At least it takes good pictures in natural lighting.

weeeellll.
i work with high resolution photos made for quality printing every week, so my standards are maybe too high for the poor 3ds.

but i agree, outside pictures are much much better. when its sunny that is.

Well, fact is, the quality of the cameras aren't pretty good. I mean, it isn't just a .3 MP camera but a special one. Forgot what it's called. Either way, if you're a photographer looking for a camera then the 3DS should not be your option.. People would look at you funny. Then again, the cameras are implemented there for fun and games. Not to jump start your professional photography career.

it means that when i print a photo from it on a standard 4x6 or 5x7, it looks bad.
just dont count on it if you plan to travel and bring nice photos.

but theyre fine for facebook .
