Topic: Abysmal Wifi range with New 3DS xL

I'm having issues with the WiFi range of the New 3DS xL system. I got the Majora's Mask Limited Edition and my mom put it in my Easter Basket. After having a really hard time connecting to the router, I finally successfully transferred my system data over from the old 3DS xL, only to realize that I "have been met with a terrible fate."

My New 3DS xL cannot connect to the router unless it is within 5 or so feet. I Googled this issue to find I am not the only person experiencing this issue. It seems to mostly affect the special edition gold and silver models. Most of the results on Nintendo Tech forums blame the router for any connection issues. I made a video prooving that it is not the router to blame by testing the DS Link range using a copy of New Super Mario Brothers. My New 3DS xL drops the connection around 4 feet. I tested the same link between my old 3DS xL and my 2004 DS phat and was able to achieve a line-of-sight range of 50 feet.

I can't help but think I've been stuck with a dud, and worse, I didn't realize it until after I performed the system transfer.

Here's a video showing the abysmal wireless range.

What should I do guys? Buy another unit and back up my data to the new one (after confirming that it works) before sending the old one back for warranty? I would hate for Nintendo to lose my eShop history or my save data.

I've got the same model, and I've had no issues (other than my apartment's faulty internet connection). Did you cover your tracks and try it with other internet connections? Do you know if the same problem occurs during things like download play and StreetPass?

If it were me, online play on the 3DS is nothing that would be missed, but it depends on the player. I suppose you just get another model.

Got married.

As demonstrated in the video, it loses connection with the 3DS xL at four feet. My phat DS lost connetion with that same 3DS xL system at more than fifty feet away. That would pretty much make streetpass events an impossibility unless I'm practically sitting in the other party's lap. If a WiFi hotspot was mounted on the ceiling at a coffee shop, it would likely be out of range with me sitting directly underneath it. If I want to game with a friend who's sitting on the opposite end of a sofa, we would get disconnected.

As someone who lives for street-passes and carries around a 3DS as my only "smart" device (I still use a flip phone with no data plan), that's completely unacceptable. And I can't just send it back because I've already performed the system transfer and would lose my apps, games, and save data. The enhanced web browser and super stable 3D are a dream come true for me.

Plus if it is warranty repaired chances are the special edition is lost. I have no solution.

Try it on another router and network before sending it in.

Don't hate me because I'm bnahabulous.

Is this the only device in your house you are having Wifi issues with?

It is not the router because it has been tested without a router between the DS/3DS XL.

That sucks, sorry. It seems like it's a faulty system. I don't see anyway around not sending it in for repairs. My family has three systems (a blue XL, SE Mario & Luigi XL, and a "new" black XL) and the only issues we ever had was that we went through two different Mario & Luigi SE systems because of bad cases of dead pixels. When we bought it brand new, it was so bad that I exchanged it after about a week, at the store where I bought it and I had to have Nintendo freeze our NNID account because the store wouldn't leave us do a system transfer first. It took Nintendo about 3 weeks to get our account back to us but they did work with us on this because we didn't want to lose our free copy of Pokemon that we got as a promo. Our second Mario & Luigi SE XL also has dead pixels but I refused to go through the process again so we decided to live with the dead pixels, which are more then your average dead pixel problem (white circle of dead pixels to the lower left side of the upper screen). Our other two systems have no problems at all though.

Does anybody know if it's possible to system transfer from a New 3DS to an old one? If I can transfer my data back to my old 3DS xL, that would prevent me from needing to buy an extra New 3DS xL. I'll only have to wait 7 days before I'm eligible for another transfer so I might try it out and see.

What I'm afraid of is if I send it to Nintendo for repairs with all my stuff on it, I might lose my save data and Street Pass progress even if they reinstate my eShop purchases. That would really suck.

I don't believe you can transfer back to an older model.

@StarDust4Ever Sadly you cannot transfer it back to an older model. You can only transfer it to a new XL. So you're only solution is to transfer your data to a another NEW Nintendo 3DS and send it yours for repair. Unless you have a relative or friends who has one lying around (highly unlikely), you'll need to purchase another unit to do the transfer. If you're sending it in as it is, the chances of the tech formatting your system is like 99%. Good luck and keep us posted how it goes.

These are the times we would wished that Nintendo have a better account system. Sony's account system just puts Nintendo's into the dumpster.

Well I splurged on a second Black Nintendo 3DS xL. Yeah right now I'm 100% positive the gold system was bum. I walked to the far corners of my house with the Black New 3DS xL and my internet connection was rock solid. Didn't venture into the yard though because it's raining. Like my old 3DS xL, I'm picking up signals from the neighbors too, but it's even stronger this time. Two bars from my neighbor's WiFi which is more signal than my old 3DS xL ever got. System Transfer in progress.

The original "New" 3DS xL still loses signal when I leave the room with the router. I'm going to return it to Nintendo claiming the WiFi flat out doesn't work.

@Faruko Well to be fair, the $40 per year you are paying gives you much more than just cloud storage. The discounts and free games every month is just too good to pass on (I own both PS3 and PS4). However I do wish PS+ was optional and Sony didn't lock online multiplayer behind that pay wall.

No it's definitely the console. "New" black one gets rock solid 3 bars connection throughout the house and into the yard. The gold one barely makes 10 feet.

My game plan at the moment is to send back the gold unit with the defective WiFi to be refurbed by Nintendo, and hopefully resell the Gold edition after it is fixed to recoup my losses. I'm out about $217 dollars right now (including tax) on the additional Black model.

When I send the gold unit back to Nintendo for repairs, do I just ship the console or the box and documentation with it? That refurbished gold Zelda 3DS would be hard to break even on without the box and supplemental material.

FTR, I bought mine at retail by camping in front of Target so no scalper fees.

Works fine for me. I can connect from about 30 metres away. It's either your router or your particular 3DS.

It's dangerous to go alone! Stay at home.

Nintendo will tell you what to send. usually you send the console and your SD card.
