I will get a 2DS on my birthday, will I be able to play with my friend who has a 3DS XL?

(The game we want to play is Pokemon Alpha Sapphire BTW)

Yes. Multiplayer works the same regardless of whether you're using a 3DS, 3DS XL, 2DS, New 3DS or New 3DS XL.

Yeh, in terms of software, I think it's fairly safe to think of a 2DS as a 3DS but just without the 3D.
