Topic: 3DS/XL Hinge problems fixed?

I used to own a 3DS and 3DSXL at one point however i sold both after continuing issues with Loose/breaking hinges and on the 3DS the plastic touching the screen creating marks (yes i am insanely careful with my systems so it was not abuse,in addition it's not like it hasn't happened to other people all over the net with a quick google search) That said my Vita has...well more or less ZERO new games worth buying (which has been the case for awhile now) So i am tempted to grab a 3DS/XL/2DS again but the last thing i want to do is send my units back to Nintendo for the same issue (or have gamestop replace them). Have those issues been remedied since then? If not are their any known issues with the 2DS? (since i don't use the 3d anyways).

Cheers

I never had hinge issues with my non-2DS models, except from the 3D mode flickering on the XL and the screen marks.

If you really worry about the hinges, well, the 2DS is exempt from those problems. But the other models shouldn't be too bad with proper care,

My original launch Aqua Blue 3DS and Japanese Ice White 3DS never encountered any hinge issue, yet both of my Red 3DS XL and 30th Anniversary Luigi 3DS LL have their right hinge cracked. Even if I tried to be gentle with the latter, it didn't managed to prevent its hinge from breaking up. I have no idea why it kept happening, but my black 3DS XL bought since late January 2014 is flawless.

I have a 3DS since April 2011 and a XL since October 2013, and I haven't had a problem since. The 3DS did get the screen scratched, but that problem was solved with the XL remodeling.

I will comment in this thread, never being able to find it again.

When i owned a 3DSXL it was a launch unit and it exhibited the problem hence my concern, (in addition to loose hinges within 45 days). More replies the better but good to hear Most posts are positive so far.

A "loose" hinge isn't even a problem, so there's nothing to be fixed.

I've never even read or heard about a broken hinge.

A loose hinge is an extreme problem when the slightest movement destroys the 3d effect (for those who use it) and too much play on the hinge is what causes it to break in the first place. . Google the issue or check YouTube not only does/did the issue exist their are quite a few stories about it several even from big gaming media like review tech USA. The question is more if that flaw was fixed not if it existed as it most definitely did (also had it happen to me personally with both a launch 3ds and launch 3dsxl) but that was quite some time ago hence my curiosity I intend to get back into the 3ds either way just debating between models as if another hinge dies on me ill just end up getting it repaired and sell it again..

It doesn't effect how the console runs, so what's the problem?
Besides, not having that sort of give is probably what causes pressure cracks.
I'm aware of both situations, but anyone that has a complaint aboyt this, is being nitpicky.
We might as well complain that tons of laptops have a shaky hinge.

Actually great analogy because when laptop hinges get too loose that's usually when they begin to break. (short of magnesium alloy models like ThinkPad) so it's not being picky it's a major design flaw and distracting while holding it at times. Enough so Nintendo generally repairs or replaces without question if within warranty. Both my former 3ds units started like that both graduated to cracks. Still in not here to argue just seem if the issue is still out there if it is I'll buy a 2ds no problem if it isn't either a 3ds or XL depending. Either way I'll buy one just deciding which.

It's very unlikely that your 3DS XL hinge broke, because it was loose. I've had my 3DS XL since they launched in late 2012, and have never had any issues. FYI, my 3DS XL hinge wiggles a little, too.

Another analogy would be complaining about your house creaking, every once in a while.

A creaking noise is quite a bit different than looseness on a mechanical hinge. Generally when hinges start to come loose on much of anything without repair the eventually break. We're going to have to agree to disagree on this and I would ask in kindness to stick to the original question at hand.

Well, I personally haven't had any sort of issue with my XL (got it Christmas 2012) - I mean no faults.
I would suggest, if you do get any of the range, that you invest in a plastic shell case.
Providing you invest in a decent one (£2-3) , it essentially accident-proofs your console. I check my console for scratches (off the case) every so often, but nothing.

I've accidentally had my XL fall on the ground a few times and it doesn't faze it.

If you're interested, I may be able to send you a link.

@veloster That would be great (if they ship to the US)...or another site that does perhaps?

i remember hearing older standart 3DS systems (after the red one came out) have solved the problem with those scratches. i have a black one from launch and made myself some bumpers to avoid getting scratches.

Here you are. U.S seller; and it's actually 16p cheaper now.

If you're concerned about whether it scratches your console, just say and I'll show you my XL up-close after being banged about in one for almost a year.

I've never had this problem. I own a Pink Japanese 3DS, and the US Pikachu 3DS XL, and theyre still in great shape, and I play them A LOT XD Though I am extremely careful, and make sure I have cases and screen protectors for all my handhelds day 1. Before my Pikachu 3DS XL, I did have a red XL that I bought the day it came out, and that one was fine as well.

Though I do know what you're talking about; I had 2 DS Lites, both Japanese models, one blue and the one after that pink, and the hinges on them broke within six months of owning each one :'<

I just picked one up myself. thanks for the link! I've always been a little wary of hard covers, but it sounds pretty great from your experience :3
