I've lately been comparing the specs of a 3DS to the 6th gen consoles, and the 3DS seems to be a XBOX that you can fit in your pocket. The GPU MHz is very close to that of a XBOX, but better. The 3DS also has double the ram. (3DS has 128mb, XBOX 64mb) But that doesn't matter much, since more ram just means more multitasking, which is why PC's have so much RAM compared to consoles.
The GPU;:
PS2:147.456 Mhz
XBOX:233MHz
GC:162Mhz
3DS:268Mhz
3DS> XBOX> GC> PS2
Woah, I didn't expect this at all. The 3DS has a better GPU, but when a game is made in 3D from the start, it would be like using 134mhz in 2D. That makes the GPU slightly worse than the PS2. Here's a tech demo demonstrating what the 3DS' s GPU can do, minus 3D.
Holy crap, that looks better than most 3DS/6th gen games! And this isn't even pushing the limits!
Nintendo made a real good choice when making the 3DS. It's actually pretty good in the GPU and RAM department. In CPU, it's close to that of a PS2. (PS2 has 299mhz, 3DS has 268mhz)
What do you think about the 3DS graphical abillities?
EDIT: The 3DS' s CPU is dual core, so 2x 268mhz. That's better than any 6th gen system, besides the Xbox. One core is used for system software and the other for application progamming. I hope that a developer decides to skip 3D once, so we can see the true power of the 3DS.
wow that's pretty impressive!
I'd like to see a couple more games ditching the 3D just to show off what this little handheld is capable of.

Yeah, it's practically a GC with some better shader options.
It's biggest problem is the 240p resolution, which makes it look a lot worse. Resident Evil: Revelations is still the best looking 3DS game from what I've seen.
Looking forward to: No More Heroes: Travis Strikes Again

According to GameFreak the thing cannot even run Pokemon X/Y primitive graphics in 3D... I think they are lying
That's only due to rendering limitations. If you skip the 3D, you can render more on the screen. Which means more grass, trees, CPU:s etc. on screen at the same time (which is something important in the Pokemon games).
The game can definitely be in 3D, but that'd mean we'd get less things in the overworld. I definitely support their decision.

they aren't lying, they just rushed to make the game so it's not copletely optimised how it should, otherwise how can the 3DS run MH3U almost lagless but have problem with Pokémon XY?(I'm using monster hunter as the example because it has complex monster models with lots of moving joints like Pokémon)

Y'know, I wonder why 3DS games don't have graphical settings. Like, one setting uses better graphics but disables 3D, whereas the other setting tones down the graphics but enables 3D. I think that would be pretty cool.

It would, but that's sadly not possible. Don't remember excactly why though..
Only anti-aliasing (removing jaggies) and 60fps is possible.
BTW, there was 1 game that had no 3D support... yet it doesn't even look better than any 3DS game with 3D.

which one? the one I know that has no 3D is Fractured Soul and it looks pretty good

I just checked and there are more than I thought. I was talking about Cubic Ninja.
I played the Fractured Souls demo once and now I checked a pic of it, it does look really good.
Yeah, well, you have to divide your attention between two screens, and two streams.
Ditch the touchscreen and 3D, and you'll see GCN-quality graphics. Who knows, really?
I don't know what 3DS games you've been playing, but I doubt you've seen graphics like Ocarina of Time 3D, Dead or Alive: Dimensions, Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon, and Kid Icarus: Uprising on the Gamecube.

If you'd ask me, it would have PS3-like graphics. But why ditch touch screen? Most games only use it for the inventory or map.
