I've never owned a 3DS before and there's some great titles out there and a lot of good ones to come ( zeld oot, mario bros, star fox, kid icarus,) (pokemon x/y, super smash bros, animal crossing). I'm also curious about the Wii u since it is a nintendo console... however I've read some reviews claiming the system software needs updating, there's a weak collection at the moment, and the price is up there. What do you guys think? and no I can't get both at the same time.

I'd go with the 3DS if it were up to me. There is already a pretty good list of great games out there, and more to come this year! While the Wii U may be incredibly fun, it still needs some time to correct some issues and grow its library.

Just get a regular 3DS and use the rest of the money for some games. When you save up enough get a WiiU Deluxe.

Since you're interested in both I'd go for 3DS XL for now, Wii U later. Then you can play Resident Evil Revelations, Dead or Alive Dimensions, and Fire Emblem Awakening in the meantime.

I honestly would go for the 3DS XL for now, it has a stronger library at the moment. As far as price goes I'd say the Wii U is a good price, the only thing that it lacks right now is a good library; there are some great games out for it now but not that many.

Well it depends on which games you want more. You NEVER buy a console if your not going to play the games that are out, you wait for the ones that you want to play and buy the console then. It sounds like you'd prefer the 3DS since you didn't list any games you want on the Wii U.
