I'm still awaiting the release of Scribblenauts Unlimited in the EU. Can someone who own this game + the original 3DS please tell me if they find the screen size too small for this game?

I want to pick up a 3DS XL with Scribblenauts upon release

I never had a 3DS but I've heard that the volume on the regular 3DS is louder than the XL. Which blows because I have to wear earbuds whenever I want to immerse myself in FE:A or Theatrhythm. It has to be very very quiet around me if I want to listen to the music through the speakers, otherwise the sound/music gets easily drowned out by ambient noise.

Well said, I wonder if future games will be developed to incorporate the shift in screen size... especially if the XL is still outselling the original.
Played the Monster Hunter 3 demo on my 3DS which, whilst fun, had me wishing for an XL... any serious jaggy's spotted on this or the castlevania demo?

I played the MH3 demo on my XL and the graphics on it are surprisingly sweet. Very smooth, very few jaggies. Castelvania's enemies are very jaggy too.

Jaggies are more noticeable on some games than others; it enhances the 3D effect more on some games than others too. It's really a matter of preference. But for me, the larger screens give me a better gaming experience and is more comfortable to hold. Also the large bottom touch screen will make it easier to draw/paint with Colors! 3D (something I've always wanted to try).

On a side note, I just picked up my 2nd 3ds at Best Buy, after returning my psvita. The guy at the door tried to persuade me to keep the vita

Me: Hi, I'm exchanging this item.
BB Dude: You didn't like the Vita?
Me: I prefer the games on the 3DS..
BB Dude: But... there are some good games coming out in a few months. I own a Vita...
Me: Umm... can you just put the exchange sticker on please...?

No matter how hard they try, Sony still can't convince us to buy a Vita.
Personally I would like an XL just to make holding the system more comfortable, but i'm not willing to drop $200 when I could get some of the games coming out instead.

I never understood trading in a system when it doesn't have absolute must-play games the moment you buy it. I just go play something else until the next must-have game comes out. I'll read comments like: "I guess this means I have to buy a 3DS again..." and my first thought is always: "Why didn't you just keep the darned system in the first place?!"

The Vita is a lovely, lovely handheld, and it has some awesome games on it, but the cost of those memory cards just kills me. I'm not made of money, and I'm not going to spend money on a Vita when I already own a 3DS and tons of good games are coming out for it.

In my opinion, the 3DS XL is better in every aspect including the change (back) in stylus positioning, the thinner bevels, better anti-glare, longer battery (cmon 30 min increase is something) and of course, the bigger screen. However, I also found some cons on it: Not as portable (obviously), 90% bigger pixels and the ugly design (in my opinion anyway). The pros still stack on the cons, so, overall, the 3DS XL is better.

I welcome any male teens [around 15] that likes animal crossing to friend me on the 3DS... I just want more companions to play Animal Crossing 3DS with :3

The XL design is kind of strange I guess, but definitely not ugly. Anyone else think it looks like a miniature laptop when closed? I have to say though, its build is rock solid. No creaking when pressure is applied anywhere. Only thing that annoys me is those awful Click sounds when the screen snaps into position!

Ya. XL is best IMO. It has a striking resemblance to the very first DS... beside the cameras. The resolutions of both screens are the same, the screen is just bigger. You're seeing everything you would on both, so I don't really see it as a problem. I don't recall the speakers being quiet compared to the original, but it's not really a problem for me.
Best DS ever IMO.

The design itself with either the 3DS or XL is all personal preference, but you can't deny that the 3DS looks more expensive, unique and much more intricate in design, even the telescopic stylus makes the regular XL stylus look totaly primitive. Weather you like the design or not it looks like a next gen hand held, where as the XL takes a big flashy step backwards ressembling something that belongs in the DSi XL family. :p

But here are the facts...no matter how much better somebody likes their 3DS or XL. B-)

3DS Pros

  • A crisper & cleaner looking image
  • 3D effect seems a bit sharper, more intense and pronounced
  • The Brightness, color and shadow detail are a lot better when using the Charger cable. Comparable to DS Lite quality at max brightness.
  • Comes available in neutral color temp(Panel lottery.yay) which most will agree looks alot nicer than warm
  • speakers sound better

3DS Cons

  • The sharp corners can dig into the hands after a while making it less comfortable than the XL
  • AKWARD stylus placement
  • The stlyus being telescopic makes it even more akward to use, because you always have to extend it. making things really clumsy.
  • Finger prints galore due to glossy finish, if that bugs you. Doesn't bug me! :p

XL Pros

  • Larger screens make the experience feel more engrossing & grand. No more squinting.
  • Stylus placement is much better. More functional
  • Stylus while boring in design, ditches the annoying telescopic shenanigans. Goes back to basics. Again, more functional.
  • More comfortable!
  • VC games in 1:1 are amazing The larger screens make the screen look almost as big as an actual GB screen.

XL Cons

  • Due to the screens being larger + same resolution, the picture quality doesn't look quite as crisp & clean, jaggies look a bit more obvious as well.
  • 3D effect doesn't seem quite as striking.
  • Warmer temperature only.
  • Charger does absolutely nothing when it comes to boosting the brightness.

Side by side, the 3DS(neutral temp. When using the charger) makes the XL look dull in terms of brightness & color. It's quite the difference! And when i used to play on my XL, i never once felt i was playing on a next gen hand held, more like a suped up Dsi XL! :p
Anyways, both the 3DS and XL are great, it's just a matter of what's more important to you. If anything, i miss playing games in 1:1 Gameboy mode on the XL....seriously that's thee greatest use of GameBoy emulation i've ever seen!

I'll be getting my XL soon(ordered it from Amazon) so I'll be able to do a fair comparison shortly. However, by viewing some comparison videos, the only thing the original has over the XL is the sound. Glossy finish vs matte finish and telescopic vs regular stylus is subjective. I prefer matte over glossy anyday(wiping fingerprints and smudges off the regular 3DS got annoying).

Everything else it seems the XL wins. Screen size, stylus placement, Start/Select/Home are actually buttons, 4GB SD card, better sweet spot for 3D, better designed etc.

@Waveboy
I agree. I'm pretty sure no one's worried about how it looks though. Buying it for how it looks besides function would be a horrible reason to decide against it. The pens suck to replace though. My brother chewed up 2 of my stylus that costed $13 together. He chewed one up, and I bought 2, then he chewed one of my replacements. I can not for the life of me, find replacement stylus outside of buying directly from Nintendo.
If you plan on ruining or losing your stylus, don't get the XL.

@6ch6ris6

I actually like the XL's headphone jack being on the bottom left side rather than the middle on the 3DS. But i guess it could bug people either way. With the 3DS, the wire is basically dangling straight down the middle which might look like a mess or a distraction to some, where as on the XL you barely see it due to it being on the bottom left corner, but then the wire might end up touching your left hand haha.

One of the main complaints I have with both the 3DS and XL is the weak volume when using headphones. Ya, it's loud enough when playing NES 3D Classics which are louder for some odd ball reason, but everything else is too low. Hell, the jump scares in RE: Reveltions didn't make me jump because of this. Thankfully, you can buy mini headphone amplifiers on Amazon. I bought one for about $15-$20 made by pyle which takes 1 AAA battery and wowza, it basically increases the volume X2 and gives you a boost in bass. B-) I can't imagine playing my 3DS without it now hehe. It makes all the difference! :D
