I have a dilemma regarding the transfer process between a 3DS and a 3DS XL, and I’m hoping that I can get some help with this by creating this forum post (I had commented on a pre-existing forum post earlier in the week but received no responses).

So my situation is this, I have a falling apart 3DS and two SD cards, both with data on. I hope to be able to transfer my 3DS profile onto a 3DS XL soon, with my plan being that I could swap in and out my current SD cards into the 3DS XL like one would with a memory card.

I then read this Nintendo site article on the matter, https://www.nintendo.co.uk/Support/Nintendo-3DS-2DS/Transfer-... which seems to suggest that the SD card only works on the specific 3DS it was first used on. This seems to imply that I cannot use both these old SD cards on my 3DS XL, regardless on if I transfer my profile over.

Is this true, and if so, can anyone think of a solution to my dilemma? I’ve considered trying to put the data of both SD cards together, but don’t know if that would in turn erase over the data of one of the SD cards, so I figured this swapping system would work. Reading that site though had made me unsure; please help if you can!

That article says that once you've done a system transfer, the SD card will work on the new system but not the original system. So just do a system transfer and you'll be able to use your SD cards in your 3DS XL.
Unfortunately you can't combine the data of two SD cards. Well, I think it's theoretically possible but it's a very complicated process. If you want to try to do it, there's a thread about it here: https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/boards/997614-nintendo-3ds/6547... but it's probably easier to just keep swapping the SD cards in and out.

@Dogorilla Thank you very much for the answer; that has taken a load of worry off my mind. I shall be setting out tomorrow to buy myself a 3DS XL and finally be able to play 3DS games again (it was difficult to play with rarely functioning shoulder buttons... downright impossible without a circle pad).

I do have one other quick question, though I believe I've seen a video that has the answer but figured I should ask again; should I have my SD card inside my older 3DS at the time of the transfer, placed within the newer 3DS XL or not in either 3DS whilst the transfer is going on?

I dont think you need to have the old card in. I transferred the SDCard to a new SDCard using my PC. It took forever on PC. I would imagine it would have been longer going from 3ds to 3ds. Anyway welcome back to the best system there ever was and will ever be! lol

Still playing 3DS but will have Switch soon for multiplayer with friends. I miss you guys! Adam, Joni, Gavin and the rest of the Blue Rogues from the Phantasy Star Zero Days.
