Can someone who has played a DS game on the 3DS confirm if the games are playable on the 'full screen' resolution mode? As apposed to the native resolution setting. I have purchased three DS games (NSMB, Mario Kart and PL&CuriousVillage) as I havent owned a DS before and I am now worried that these games may look so pixelated and blurry on the 3DS to the point where they are unplayable.
I would be grateful of comments from NintendoLife staff who own a 3DS and have tested DS games.
I'm a little concerned about the floppiness of the hinge. I love the way the DS Lite's clamshell can be positioned at any angle and remain firmly set. You instantly get the feeling that with the 3DS, you're obligated to keep it in one of the few "locking" positions, or else the screen will flop back over. I hate to be a cynic, but the number of downgrades in the hardware design from the more recent iterations of the DS are troubling, indeed. If I weren't so goddamn obsessed with the thing, I would just wait for the 3DS v2.0. In fact, I would highly recommend that to anyone with more patience than I.
@warnerdan this is covered in our FAQ on the front page, but I've just fired up Castlevania on my 3DS in full-screen and it looks fine. You can choose to play in their original resolution by holding Start + Select when you load the software, otherwise it's blown-up to fit the screen, but to my eyes it looks absolutely fine. Others may disagree of course!

Thanks James! I'll give the FAQ a spin before I start asking more questions
^This was brought up a while back, though I don't think in this particular thread. No offense, but I just don't see it. I watched those videos and they looked fine to me. I'll still hold onto my DS, but I wouldn't mind playing my DS games on the 3DS.
Also, no need to let some 3DS obsessed jerks get you down, man.
I'm keeping my old hardware but mostly just because I see no reason to get rid of it. This video though I kind of have issue with. It might just be the cameras but I can't see the issue they speak of. But the real issue I have with the video is the comparison of the 3DS screen to a DSiXL. Especially when the DS game is put into its native resolution on the 3DS. Of course the DSiXL has bigger screens but the native resolution is for a DS lite. I would have preferred that they compare this to a DS lite or even just a regular DSi. I don't understand why the DSiXL was used for this kind of comparison. Especially since, from my understanding, the DSiXL also stretches to make it fit, so it's not proper resolution to begin with either.

That reminds me...what was the reason that was said about the 3DS having problems fitting into pockets? I mean, if its not that much bigger than the DSi, I can't see why it wouldn't fit in my pocket. (since the DSi fits in just fine...)

Keep it PG-13-ish.

No, I don't think it does. Individual sub-pixels on the DSiXL's screens are just a lot larger so they fill the whole screen with the same resolution.
I thought the stretching of the image would be a problem for DS titles on the 3DS, but in the only comparison video I saw on youtube, I couldn't make out the difference (the irony of low quality youtube comparison videos for showing off subtle differences... ). From what I've read the stretching should be noticeably but won't kill the game.

Tbh. they're right: in comparison to smartphones the 3DS is an uncomfortable bulk in the pocket, as is any dedicated gaming handheld today, with the possible exception of the PSP Go. 3DS is just two (?) milimeters thicker than the DSi and even one (?) mm thinner than the DSLite, so it's fine.
Yea the smaller touch screen makes me wonder if that means it will be used less, or atleast be a less integral part of most games, it will be interesting to see how it pans out. I cant wait for the 3DS man I haven't been this excited in a while when it comes to gaming.
It wouldn't surprise me if the touchscreen is only there for DS backward compatibility. Now that there's an analogue stick, it may be that a lot of games will forego using the touchscreen to move characters in 3DS games.
I just played it at a sneak peak public demo station at a Gamestop in Phoenix Arizona & though I could not actually physicly handle the system I have to say that it does not look as awkward as the original ds......& I'm sure they will make a lite model at some point I absolutely loved the Street Fighter IV demo that was availible on one of the two demo stands
