If you want a dedicated gaming device with some very deep, high quality titles get a 3DS. Those who say there are none must still be living in the first 4 months of the console cycle. If you want a console with a lot of fun timewaster games (though none nearly as deep as the 3DS) with far more multimedia options, then get an Android based tablet. Don't support Crapple. Don't support Crapple. DON'T SUPPORT CRAPPLE.

Despite having less consumers, the satisfaction rate of Android phones is either much higher, or the userbase is much more vocal. So take it what you will, I'm biased against Apple, but I'm clearly not blind, an Android phone or tablet is still a pretty great investment, or maybe even a Windows phone. Just not an iPad.

None reach the depth of your high-publicity 3DS release or even your favorite sleeper hit, but as you said, you get what you pay for. Only here, you either spent it on crap or something good.
