Hi all,

It's been about 13 years since I owned a Nintendo. That was the N64, which I only owned briefly. I've been a PS man most of my adult life, but last week decided to order a 3DS!

It's not arrived yet, but I do have some questions.

Firstly, an SD card. I'm not sure which size to go for. I'm swaying towards a 16GB one as I may download lot's of classics from the e-shop. Which SD card would you advise?

What size are the GB classics? I presume these won't use much.

Also, say I decide to sell the 3DS in 6 months, from what I read, the person who buys it from you will have access to all your purchases on the e-shop as you don't create an account on the 3DS? I'm confused by this.

Say I start using the bundled 2GB card, and then decide to upgrade the card size, how do I transfer it all to the new card? Or can I just re-download purchases again at no extra cost?

Thanks in advance.

I'm a 3DS newbie too. Curious why didn't you preorder the new 3DS XL with the bundled 4GB memory card? it's only a few weeks from release in the United States.

@Jay To transfer SD card data, you select it everything on the SD card on a computer, and transfer it to the new SD card.

The GB games take very little space. I don't know how much, but it's very small.

If you want game recommendations, I suggest:

  • Super Mario 3D Land
  • Mario Kart 7
  • Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D
  • Kid Icarus: Uprising
  • Tales of the Abyss 3D
  • Pokemon Black and Pokemon White (DS)
  • Pokemon Black 2 and Pokemon White 2 (To be Released) (DS)
  • Kingdom Hearts 3D
  • Mario Tennis Open

I would recommend a 16 GB too. I have one myself, I have quite a few games and it's not even half full yet. Just to make sure though, it's got to be a SDHC. The 3DS takes 4GB and higher cards, but only if they are SDHC.

GB classics size I don't know, but it's not much.

If you want to sell it, there is an option to return it to factory settings in the System Settings.

The transfer is really easy, just make sure you don't change any of the files... And make sure you have a card adapter if your computer doesn't have a SDHC port-thingy. I totally forgot about this when I got my SDHC. Haha.

Say what now?

I bought the standard 3DS because I wasn't keen on the size of the XL. I also heard the resolution wasn't as good.

I have a 4 GB one that's not even half full. If you're aiming towards full retail downloads (i.e. New Super Mario Bros. 2), then go for an 8 or 16 GB one. If you're sticking to smaller eShop games, a 4 GB should suffice for a while.

Some may not even be 1 MB. Nothing really noticeable.

For now, purchases are tied into the system. If you sell your 3DS directly to another person, they'll have access to everything unless you formatted the system.

You can copy the entire folder from the old SD card into a folder on your computer, then copy from your computer to the new SD card. Just be sure that you do not modify any files or folders in the process. As long as you are using the same 3DS, the content will be available on any SD card you use (as long as it's compatible).

Thanks - so if I ever have a problem with the system, and do a full factory reset, I'll lose all my purchases?

I heard the resolution of the 3DS XL is exactly the same. No pixelization.

Mixed opinions about it, but I'm happy with a standard 3DS for now.

my 2 gig. card is pretty much full and full retail downloads are on the way so I'm getting a 32 gig. card when I get the 3DSXL so you might want a 32 gig. card as well because you will never need another sd card again.

Favorite Games: Sonic CD, Sonic 3 and Knuckles, Kirby Nightmare in Dreamland, and Call of Duty: Black Ops, Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game, and Mega Man 5.

But will ANY SDHC card do? Or does it have to be a specific speed?

If you prefer to download rather than buy cartridge games I'd recommend 32 GBs since Nintendo is starting to release games both digital and cartridge. I'd recommend class 10 it determines oh fast the games load but you don't need outrageous speed I'd say 10mb/s would be more than enough.

Wow, Mario 2 only 370mb?!

Are all these coming to the store though? Any ideas on how much they will cost? If it's anything like Playstation, I'd be better off buying the cartridges.

So go for Class 10 then? Something like this?

The size for the Gameboy classics vary but Metroid 2: Return of Samus was 37 blocks. I currently have 45,583 blocks open on my 8 GB SD card, and a little over 2 of them have been used.

To transfer between SD cards, plug it into a computer and copy it onto there (DON'T OPEN THE FILES, THAT RUINS THEM) and then move the files onto your new SD card.

Yes, the "Account" you have on the eShop is linked to your 3DS no login or password, so anyone who has your 3DS can access it. You CAN delete it though, delete your games and erase any credit card saved data.

16 GB should be all you'll ever need, but if your going solely for the GB games the 2 GB might be enough for you. 16 GB should be all you'll ever need if you plan on getting a lot of 3DSWare games, and 32 GB is probably overkill unless you store a couple thousand videos, all the 3DSWare games, and getting all your games as a download. etc. I plan on sticking with my 8 Gig for awhile, mainly because I don't plan on getting any retail as a download.

My SD Card with the game on it is just as physical as your cartridge with the game on it.
I love Nintendo, that's why I criticize them so harshly.

Thanks. I was going to get an 8GB card but there's very little difference in price between them.

So if your 3DS breaks, and you get a replacement, can you not re-download your purchases on another console? Or is that something Nintendo has to do?

At this point, I think only NSMB2 and Brain Age have been confirmed for the eShop. That said, I do believe Nintendo will release as much of their library as possible, as soon as they find the correct time to do so.

That's a great price for a 16 GB SD card especially a SanDisk.
