Its disturbing how few Real Time Strategy games there are on Handheld consoles, ESPECIALLY on the DS/3DS. You'd think that the touch screen interface would be perfect for real time strategy.
We all know 3DS could handle it, especially with the Circle-Pad and more powerful system specs. And I dont know about any of you, but im very tired of all the Turn Based Strategy games. Real Time Strategy, plz? :3

Maybe a Lost Magic sequel that fixes the issues of the original game.

It was really fun, nevertheless.

I am also surprised by the lack of RTSs on the Wii as well. If we look at the XBox it had "Halo Wars" and "Command and Conquer" yet the controller is not suited for RTS. I can understan the DS not having them due to processing power to handle all the units but the touch screen begs for it. The Wii should have had a few since the Wiimote was the closest controller to the mouse on pc. I think the 3DS is in a very good position to get an RTS. The single friend code also helps.

Yes, the 3DS is prime for an actual RTS game.I remember when Blizzard talked about Starcraft for DS (And Diablo for PSP) and I was just so jacked until they said it wasnt happening. Maybe Blizzard should take this chance to make Starcraft on 3DS, or heck, maybe even a new Warcraft game (that isnt WoW for once). I just cant get my fix of RTS games since my computer broke! D:

it needs age of empires. a real aoe, not the crappy ds ones. i started rts's with aoe2 and to me starcraft and red alert just don't compare.

Starcraft is my favorite game of all time. Ever.
It would be a dream come true to have that on 3DS.
>:C I hate starcraft 2 though... Lol...

I think the biggest problem is that there aren't as many RTSs as there once was. That peaked about 10 years ago. At that time we had then regularly. Age of Empires/Rise of Nations, Warcraft, Starcraft and Command and Conquer are the main ones but the gaming world has changed. Ensemble Studios was dismantled, Warcraft switched to MMORPG, consoles have received more attention and finally production takes longer. We don't get them as often. At this point I think they can get praise for just showing up.

the touch screen is ideal, the small screen is not

RTS games tend to have 20-30 + units per team imagine this many units along with the environment on your tiny screen. If that would be at least 15-20 on your screen per encounter the units should be super tiny. Or how much annoying it would be to jump left and right every time you get attacked and your units are out of screen. They could have less units and less buildings etc. you might say, well they could, but it wouldn't be the same.

AND AoE on DS is NOT Crappy!

Much like jerryo is saying you can't just port your typical Starcraft or Command & Conquer to the 3DS without making any changes. I mean i haven't really played any RTS on the DS yet but i guess gameplay-wise you can't get much better than in titles like Heroes of Mana, Final Fantasy XII: Revenant Wings, Blue Dragon Plus, Lego Battles and Eco Creatures / Ecolis.

And companies might heavily think about the 3D effect of the 3DS. Mainly having to concentrate on the non 3D touchscreen doesn't make it easy to have a beneficial 3D effect in such a game.

I can see where jerryo is coming from but I would thing the smaller screen has advantages too. you don't have to move the stylus as far to execute commands. At the same time you wouldn't have to control an individual unit if you can assign them to a group. Also assigning a rally point to an open location would also alleviate congestion around the base as well. Double tapping a unit to get all of the same type of units would help too..

Most of those concerns seem to be more interface issues but that can still be done correctly. The thing I would be more concerned about is being able to patch the game to help with balancing issues.

@Bonesy91, yes that Starcraft style game on the iPod Touch did look interesting.

Anyway I personally prefer Turn Based Strategy (Final Fantasy Tactics, Dofus) over RTS because I haven't really played any good RTS games yet. Age of Empires was my favorite until they stopped making those games. I really did want to get into StarCraft after reading the StarCraft manga but the price of StarCraft II is just to steep and so therefore I'll just wait. I don't see RTS games happening on the 3DS and NGP however because like Rob-Mc-1 has already pointed out, that genre is basically dead. I only hope that Halo Wars will get a port on the 3DS and NGP because I seriously enjoyed Halo Wars and I'd love to play that on the go instead of in the confines of home.

I would use the word dead. It's just that the last 2 major franchises that are left (Starcraft, C&C) are in control by a) a company that has no qualms releasing buggy games and shutting down servers and b) a company that will delay a game six months to get all the wrinkles out of the shrink wrap during manufacturing of the packaging. C&C was better before EA got involved but at least they didn't kill it.

I SERIOUSLY doubt Halo will EVER make its way to a Nintendo console, mainly because Microsoft owns all rights to Halo now, and left Bungie out to dry. And last time I checked, Microsoft does not like Nintendo very much. Or Sony. Or anything, really, Lol!

I never said they should 'port' Starcraft, or any other RTS game. I said they should make one, building on the strengths of the 3DS. That doesnt mean they cant port the assets from (lets use this as our example) Starcraft or Starcraft 2. They would ultimately have to simplify the models and textures, but that would make their work a lot easier overall, instead of completely rebuilding everything for the game. The top screen could be used as either A.) The screen where you manage units, probably using the Circle-Pad to move your cursor, and have the bottom screen manage buildings, unit production, Map, ect. Or you could go with B.) with the opposite way, having the map and stuff on the top screen while managing units via touch screen. The only problem with the second option would be sacrificing the 3D effect.

AOE is still alive and kicking. Age of Empires Online is in beta i think. it's not by ensemble but i think ensemble people worked on it
