If the 3DS did get even Skype, it could deal a serious blow to the iPhone market share. But 3D video chat? I don't personally see the possibility, as the 3D cameras face out, not in. We know they're working on having 3D movies on the 3DS as well.

What do you all think? Would a video-playing, video chat enabled 3DS bury the iPhone? Or has the PSP already shown that such is not possible?

iPhone's always connected to the internet, unlike the 3DS. Big difference.

Even if it did do all that stuff, I doubt it will be an "iPhone Killer."

Well, maybe not Iphone but definitely the i-Touch. If Iwata follows on that FREE 3G connection thing that Amazon Kindle uses to download books- then I guess so. Throw in Skype for the possible kill..

The 3DS isn't actually aimed so squarely at the iPhone. Many expected Nintendo to do just that by launching a more download-oriented system to compete with the App Store, but instead the 3DS is clearly geared away from the cheap, downloadable gaming market and towards becoming the platform for portable games with higher production values, or games from more traditional genres.

It stands a chance of being a PSP / PSP2 killer, but the iPhone is something very different.

Somehow I think the mainstream would be more willing to pay for 3G for something officially considered a phone instead of a game handheld. But that's just me.

i don't want a multitasker when it comes to a gaming system, not unless it's just showing movies. even getting on the internet is somewhat of a hassle with the Wii and DSi -- it's fun to mess around with, but i'd hate to have to rely on it. i'd have to see all this video-chat/skype stuff and how it handles before i'd be able to judge whether or not it'd be any kind of competition with the iPhone.

You know I'm sold on the Nintendo 3DS. This is exactly what I'd been waiting for. I believe that the Nintendo 3DS will prove to Apple that they can't hurt the video game industry the way they had been trying to make it seem the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad would.

Out of all the games that are on the upcoming release list for the Nintendo 3DS there are two that I'm looking forward to the most and they are: Paper Mario and PilotWings Resort.

Not long ago, Steve Jobs and Phil Schiller made it seem as if Nintendo and Sony PlayStation were in imminent danger and that the iPod Touch was the best choice for teens and young adults. While I admire Steve Jobs and the impressive empire he has created at Apple with the new iPhone 4 and iPad Touch I would never choose his products over any thing that Nintendo made.

Apple will always have it's place in the world as they are far better than Microsoft anyday. Yet, when it comes to having a mobile device that is equivalent to an Army Swiss Knife it is obvious that the Nintendo 3DS is the right choice. The Nintendo 3DS will be "always on" when it comes to Internet access plus WiiConnect 24 similar features, it will have an e-Reader application, 3D Video Chat, and the ability to play Movies in 3D. Basically the Nintendo 3DS is a PocketWii. 3D Video Chat on the 3DS would be a death blow to the iPhone.

Well, TokyoRed, there are a few things you mentioned that weren't really confirmed but were talked about as a possibility (well, the video chat and e-Reader app mainly, the 3D movies are technically confirmed).

Besides, why the heck would it have an e-Reader application? Didn't that fail like 8 years ago?

Then again, I'm pretty sure they wouldn't go after the iPhone's market, it's better that they kill the i-Touch.

I don't think they mean the e-reader that read trading cards for mini-games on the GBA, I think they mean a Kindle-type e-Reader that reads books, like an expanded version of 100 classic books.

Exactly.

They already did.
That $1 spent on Pocket God, was a dollar not spent on Nintendo.
And Apple made $0.29 out of it.

Then, when I buy $13 games, like Chaos Rings (which you all should IMHO)
Nintendo looses $13, Apple makes $3.90, and Square Enix makes $9.10

I would consider that cutting directly into Nintendo's bottom line, when otherwise, I would have bought DSiWare.

Essentially this ^, Iam currently getting a degree in marketing and it always makes me giggle a little bit when people say psp ds and ipod touch/phone are not competing with each other. With that being said, I love all systems, I love games period.

The Nintendo DSi XL is already a sign that the Nintendo 3DS will have an e-Reader application. Nintendo is certainly going to try to pit the 3DS against both the Amazon Kindle e-Reader and iPod Touch/ iPad. While it is true that Nintendo might not tackle the iPhone head on, it is quite obvious that Nintendo will not turn a blind eye to the iPhone market as Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata proclaimed earlier this year that "Apple is the enemy of the future." It was clear that Nintendo was shifting their focus on Apple when they announced the DSiWare Shop for the Nintendo DSi. It would indeed be a bad move on Nintendo's part to not add an e-Reader app to the 3DS when Sony has already added an e-Reader style application to the PSP for comics. Both Sony and Nintendo realize that Apple is a monstrosity of a threat to their domain and I can assure you that Nintendo will strive to level the battle field in everyway possible against Apple.

Apple has permanently changed the way people look at computers, they’ve raised the bar in what people expect their computers to do and they have tremendously changed the way business transactions are done with the Apple Application Store. By introducing the concept of downloadable content (DLC) Apple has made CD’s, DVD and ZIP Disk even more of an endangered species than they were before the existence of the Apple App Store and this fact is magnified even more by Sony’s PSPgo which is built entirely around the concept of DLC. Even GameStop has acknowledged that they have been affected in a negative way by both the Apple App Store and by the PSPgo’s DLC initiative which is why GameStop was eager to begin selling PlayStation Network, Nintendo Points and Apple App Store Prepaid Cards. Apple’s influence is even more visible in the fact that Sony chose to introduce PlayStation Minis simultaneously with the launch of the PSPgo.

It is quite obvious that Nintendo is learning quite a lot from observing the “outside the box” ideas of the incredible minds at Apple while observing the mistakes of the executives at Sony PlayStation not to mention that Nintendo has always thought “outside the box” as was proven when Nintendo was declared the “winner of the 2010 E3” by the who’s who of the computer and electronics industry such as Wired Magazine and joystiq.com following the magnificent unveiling of the Nintendo 3DS.

I believe that Satoru Iwata will go forward with an e-Reader and 3D Video Chat on the Nintendo 3DS. It is quite obvious that the 3DS will be the first Cadillac, “must have” handheld from the innovators at Nintendo. It is not hard to conclude that Nintendo will implement 3D video chat on the 3DS especially when it was the intention of Nintendo originally to put a chat function of some sort on the Dsi. Nintendo is not going to let Sony continue to dominate communication with Skype on the PSP and that fact in and of itself is a surefire proof that 3D Video Chat will materialize on the 3DS and an e-Reader is also very much a given considering Nintendo has already released 100 Classic Books on the Dsi XL. It is also worth nothing that if the Wii has WiiSpeak that Nintendo will strive to put something similar on the Nintendo 3DS since the 3DS is in actuality a mobile PocketWii in everyway.

The bottom line of all this is that neither Sony nor Apple can dethrone Nintendo from the rightful place of “King of Handhelds”. While the iPod Touch is indeed an impressive device it is quite obvious after having watched Nintendo’s presentation at this years past E3 that the Nintendo 3DS will give the iPod Touch and the iPad a nice “push and shove” once it arrives on store shelves next year.

Nintendo's really got to get their downloadable online shops available to more people. The App Store is just better than the DSi Shop in every way, in terms of library, price, sales, easy usage, and updates.
Library: App Store has hundreds of new apps every week
Price: Literally every game on DSi Shop and the App Store is cheaper on the App Store (i.e. Asphalt 4, Dark Void Zero, Dragon's Lair)
Sales: Items on the App Store actually go on sale regularly
Easy usage: Quick access, Top 25, etc.
Updates: Apps available on the store are usually updated very regularly, fixing bugs, adding more content, or giving new controls. It is very important to point out that developers actually listen to reviews customers give them.
