Baffling, really... Unless they are moving to a system where prices aren't fixed by Nintendo. All those Nintendo Points cards out there... worthless after the 3DS comes along? Well, I guess you could always turn them in on your DSi and then buy things and transfer them to the 3DS when that becomes available... I dunno, I don't see the point in changing from pennies to dollars, er, points to dollars, unless they're changing their pricing structure, which they could do without changing the name from points to pennies... Nope, I don't get it. Wait... maybe... just like PSN, they're changing to real currency because they're going to charge real taxes on the sales! That would explain it.... hopefully not, though.

@Peznaze There's still the Wii that can use them. And all the DSi users who aren't buying the 3DS or are waiting to buy it.

I wonder If they will allow you to transfer your points from the DSi into cash on the eshop

Unfortunately no, any points that you have in your DSiWare account cannot be transfered and converted into cash for use on the 3DS eShop. This is according to an article that I read on Joystiq.com.

Interesting. Never thought Nintendo will abandon the point system and go straight to credit/debit/prepaid cards. Though this is not going to bother me since I'm not really afraid of giving out my credit card information on a service as much as other people do.

I've used my card for years and have never had a problem with the service. You are just as much at a risk using your card to buy a points card than you are using it on the Shop Channel

Cool and lets hope they develop some $1 apps(Would that be bad?) or lower the price on some of those 200pt games to $1 in the DSiWare(If they still have it, I loved Birds & Beans(Pyoro).

I know, I've been using just my credit card to buy points right on the Shop Channel for a long time now. It's actually more risky to put your credit card into into Ebay/Amazon then your Wii console.

Hope it's not like PSN where even if you buy with a credit card, they still make you buy in increments of $5 to cover tax. :P

The GameStop near me used to not charge tax of Nintendo Points cards, but now they do. Guess I'll avoid the PSN cards to avoid being double-taxed.

What do you mean about covering tax? You spend all that you buy anyway, tax is added at purchase.

Good idea. Both my Wii and my DSi have a measly 100 points on them. Seems like whenever I want to buy a game, I never have enough points, so I buy some more, then I have some left over, but never enough for another game that I want.

You can always avoid spending certain amounts, let it build up and do some math. Spend it all when its needed.

That would suck, charging tax.

While we're talking about pricing structure, I hope Nintendo goes the Apple route and gives the developers the same freedoms that Apple gives App Store developers. I'm doubtful, but I can hope.

I don't mind the Wii Points, I liked them. Too bad for people that don't have credit cards (like me). I hope they will support iDeal in Holland.

Also, just for the record, E-shop will not be operational at launch. Will be patched in later.

Personally, I think this is pretty poor from Nintendo. Not outright fail, but not far off.

Region lock and awful battery life I could deal with, but not being able to spend my Ninty points in the e-shop is just crazy.

Not buying!! :x

Why is this a bad thing? If you want a 5 dollar game, you pay 5 dollars, not 10. It makes perfect sense to me.

Apple doesn't really give developers true freedom. If Apple doesn't like the application they pull it from the app store. Pick up the February issue of MacLife and MacWorld magazines and you can find out about the ugly truth of what goes on behind the scenes at Apple with the developers and the app store. So, no I hope Nintendo doesn't do that. It'd be ugly to see Mario's Big N crushing the free digital market like that. It'd be better if Nintendo went the route of XBOX Live.
